Sleeps 8 but 6 adults and two children as bunk beds, plus seating in living room.

Tucked away on the western edge of Whitsand Bay, with its seemingly endless stretch of soft golden sands, is the small Cornish fishing village of Portwrinkle. This feels like a place where time slows down, where life revolves around the sea and the seasons, and you can escape from modern life, enjoy great local food, walk, swim, explore, relax.

Portwrinkle, along with many other coastal villages in the area, was once part of the thriving pilchard trade and you can still see many of the pilchard cellars where the fish were stored and processed today. In times gone by the pretty harbour was lined with fishing boats landing their catch, and by night the area was the haunt of smugglers who used the surrounding rocky coves and cliffs for their illicit trade.

Today your holiday in Portwrinkle will find you out and about enjoying the many beautiful nearby beaches.  To the west of the harbour you’ll find the quiet, sandy crescent of Hoodny Cove and to the east is Finnygook Beach with its popular stretch of sand and shingle and a wealth of rockpools exposed at low tide.  Both have clear water for swimming and surfing and at Portwrinkle you’re within walking distance of the many other sandy beaches that line beautiful Whitsand Bay.

Eat out at a choice of local pubs and cafes including the Jolly Roger cafe on Finnygook Beach and the renowned Finnygook Inn serving excellent food, found just half a kilometre away in the nearby hamlet of Crafthole.  Enjoy the breathtaking coastal scenery walking the South West Coast path which runs through the village, or take to the waves and learn to surf at nearby  Whitsand Bay Surf School.  Other days out can be spent visiting The Monkey Sanctuary or historic Port Elliot House and Gardens both just a few miles away.   And if that’s not enough, just a short hop in the car brings you to Adrenaline Quarry home to a huge inflatable assault course, zip lines, go-carting and lots more fun for all the family.

So choose a holiday in Portwrinkle if you crave a break from it all surrounded by stunning, unspoilt scenery, panoramic sea views and fabulous beaches in this largely undiscovered part of Cornwall.

Lovely food and atmosphere and friendly staff. Dpg friendly and blankets for outside if chilly.

August 2023

Very nice meal in a glorious setting. Felt the waiting staff were young and inexperienced but despite this they were very pleasant and I am sure will improve with time. Prices were what we would expect for eating out these days.

July 2023

Fantastic views from the terrace, very friendly staff.

August 2022

Great pub with wonderful food. The views of the sunset from the deck across the beach are unbeatable. Friendly staff too and dog friendly!

August 2022

Excellent service fair prices the Haddock fish cakes are amazing!!

July 2022

What have they done? Really, really, really expensive food and drink, £10.50 for a glass of wine! It was quiet every time we went for a drink though and could get a table easily. The last few years we have visited Downderry, we would eat and drink there many times but not this year - too pricey, even with the view.

July 2021

Great for sunset drink but very limited expensive menu

June 2021

We visited the Inn on the Shore after a "strenuous" walk from Portwrinkle to Downderry on the South West Coastal path. The pub was a welcome site after the ups and downs of the pathway! Aweseome fish and chips were served along with a well deserved cold beer. At the time we visited, COVID regulations led us to be seated outside, we felt safe in the environment and were well looked after. Its also doggy friendly.

May 2021

Very welcoming. Nice food. Dog friendly

January 2020

Was amazed at the friendliness of the staff and the food was amazing we went in 3 times to eat and eat time the quality was brilliant. Pet friendly also and the addition of entertainment on Christmas Eve was a bonus. Would definitely recommend it and would return next year.

December 2019

Recently refurbished and offering a great option for a spot of lunch or cheeky pint while out walking from Seaton to Downderry. Great outdoor terrace with view over the beach. Nice range of local ales and food also good.

October 2019

Went here for the Sunday lunch, suggest you book as many of the locals also go here for it. Great food and very friendly staff. Not expensive but great food. Enjoyed sitting out on the decking watching the sunsets. Very dog friendly. They even have blankets available if the evening chill is too much. A little known fact is that they will package up most of the menu so you can have it as a take away for either back at your home or on the beach.

September 2019

Fantastic sea views from this place, nice restaurant too.

The Monkey Sanctuary
(5 miles)

(1)

Not perhaps what you might expect to find in Cornwall, The Monkey Sanctuary is a delightful opportunity to learn about its 36 inhabitants, all of whom have distinct characters and personalities.  An active rescue centre dealing with individuals that have often not had a very happy start to life, the priority is always their wellbeing, but it’s also an opportunity for guests to meet them and learn about the organization, explore the gardens and cultivated meadows, shop or relax in the café.  There’s also a play area for children, with views of the Cornish coast.  The sanctuary is closed on Fridays, but otherwise open from March to September (dates vary from year to year, so keep an eye on the website).  Prices start at £8.50 per adult and £5 for children, which entitles you to entry for a whole year.

Rame Head
(6 miles)

(1)

Rame Head, or the Rame Peninsula as it is also known,  is an Area of Outstanding Beauty perfect for exploring on foot.  Footpaths criss-cross a rich rural landscape dotted with pretty villages all bordered by the South West Coast Path linking fabulous cliff top walks with pretty tidal creeks and sandy beaches.  Bordered by three sides by water, the peninusula is still easily accessed from Plymouth via the Torpoint Car Ferry, the Cremyll Passenger Ferry and in summer, by the Weston Maid or from other areas by bus or car.  Highlights include Mount Edgcumbe House, Port Eliot House, St Michaels Chapel ruins and the beaches of Whitsand Bay, Cawsand and Kingsand.

Whitsand Bay
(3 miles)

A 3 mile stretch of perfect sand located between Rame Head and Portwrinkle, this is possibly one of the best beaches in this part of Cornwall. It is worth noting though that there are dangerous rip currents, and although there is lifeguard cover May-September, swimming here can be dangerous.  Access to the beach is via steep cliff paths, unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushcharis from car parks at either end. The easiest access is from the car park near Tregantle Fort leading to Long Sands beach. The other car park is located near Sharrow Point and leads down to Freathy and Tregonhawke Beach.  Dog allowed all year round.

Seaton Beach - Cornwall
(4 miles)

(9)

A spacious, grey sand beach that’s popular with families, Seaton Beach enjoys views across the green, surrounding countryside and walks in Seaton Valley nearby. At low tide the beach stretches all the way from Seaton Beach to Downderry Beach.  There are facilities close by and there is are two car parks as well as road parking, but it does get busy quickly in the summer.  The beach is great for surfing, but do be wary of undercurrents.  There’s also a café and beach shop close by as well.  Dogs are welcome at the beach all year round.

Millendreath Beach
(6 miles)

(1)

Millendreath Beach is a south facing beach at the foot of a wooded valley, in a sheltered cove with soft sand and lots of rock pools to explore at low tide.  It’s connected to other nearby beaches by the South West Coast Path.  Dogs aren’t allowed on this beach at any time of the year, and there is a reasonably sized car park a few minutes walk away.  The beach is popular with families on holiday in Cornwall, and most of the surrounding area is occupied by a holiday park, so there are lot of facilities open to the public.

Fantastic beach with wonderful water sports facilities available, loved the sea kayaks!

July 2022

September 2023

I was underprepared for such a staggering view. Totally breathtaking. My wife, kids and myself had a wonderful holiday, in a remarkable place. Thank you.

June 2023

A lovely house in an excellent position with everything you need for a home from home study. Weather was amazing which was the icing on the cake of a great week.

April 2023

It was a lovely house, very well appointed. It wasn't super clean - lots of dusty surfaces and cobwebs, but acceptable.

November 2022

No attraction reviews as primarily a visit to see family and the SEA!

November 2022

Weather was atrocious but the house was a pleasure to stay in. We would certainly visit again.

June 2022

We really did enjoy our stay and everything we needed was in the cottage. Didn’t get the welcome pack like last year which would’ve helped hungry tummies though!

June 2022

Loved it!!! Fantastic location. Lovely view. Awesome beach. Brilliant holiday.

May 2022

Despite my comments on the cleanliness, it was a fabulous house that was very well equipped and did actually catered for 8. The beds were super comfy and the bathrooms lovely with great water pressure. We did see previous reviews that said thanks for the welcome pack which we didn’t have but a pint milk to have a cuppa on arrival would have been nice. None of this spoilt our stay though as we had a fabulous week and will definitely be returning (by the way, the directions were so easy to follow and very helpful)

May 2022

Had a wonderful stay. The property was ideally situated and so quiet and peaceful at this time of year. Perfect for a family holiday.

May 2022

Yes we did.

April 2022

The property benefits from lovely views. The view from the outside area is spectacular. The kitchen is well equipped and the showers that work lovely and powerful.

March 2022

Great sea views Very close to the beach. Very quiet location. Good for walkers as coastal path on your doorstep. Ferry from Cremyl (Mount Edgecumbe) to Plymouth worth a trip (£2pp each way). Mount Edgecumbe gardens worth a visit and free entry. Would have benefited from a pre-season deep clean.

December 2021

Excellent property. Loved watching the sunrise and then set later in the day. Terrific location. Lovely comfy beds, and all amenities Ives you could need with good fast Wi-Fi too. Thoroughly recommend this property

November 2021

Generally the house is well maintained the furnishings comfortable good quality and the kitchen and kitchen equipment was much better than a lot of holiday lets which was appreciated. The location was totally stunning and lived up to great expectations. My labrador's mind was completely blown having a beach so close and nothing beats being lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves.

October 2021

Fantastic location and beds very comfortable. Loved the terrace & the hot tub, we all really enjoyed our stay - thank you!

October 2021

The location of the property is brilliant and the wooden terrace and hot tub a really nice feature. We chose to stay here after getting marries at the weekend as a little honeymoon. The reception there is really bad and the cordless landline phone provided wouldn’t charge, so every time you picked up to call it would die. This needs looking at

August 2021

Excellent property in beautiful location. We had a very enjoyable stay.

August 2021

Wonderful location and views from house. Hot tub and jacuzzi bath a real bonus

July 2021

Yes we had a wonderful stay. Perfect location, super accommodation and the weather was the cherry on the cake

May 2021

Welcome bag and pint of milk were a lovely welcome touch Good water pressure Nice artwork Comfy beds Beautiful views from the living room windows. Quick responses from Emma Boyle, the caretaker. Sharp knives.

May 2021

The location is fabulous, the hot tub was a real highlight and having the dog with us, it was wonderful to have an enclosed garden for her to run around!
