A hike to the hilltop provides a breath-taking view of the mouth of the river, with the 8th Century St. Saviours ruin marking the point where local monks would keep a watch out for unwelcome sea-faring visitors!</p> <p>The estuary is flanked on either side by 14th Century granite blockhouses, where once a huge chain was hoisted to defend the entire river mouth all the way from Polruan to Fowey. Polruan&rsquo;s blockhouse has now been lovingly restored and is just a stones-throw from our Polruan holiday cottages.</p> <p>If you are looking for a day out at the beach, then why not pack a picnic from your self-catering holiday cottage, and head out by car or foot for Lantic Bay.
