All you need to know
As the UK’s most southerly port, Porthleven sees its fair share of weather in winter with huge waves crashing over the sea wall, but in warmer months it is transformed into an oasis of whitewashed cottages and bobbing boats against a backdrop of blue skies, green fields and sparkling ocean.
Full to the brim with traditional Cornish charm, Porthleven’s streets are lined with interesting galleries, gift shops and jewellers to browse, but many visitors are drawn here by the outstanding pubs and restaurants. If you’re holiday isn’t complete without experiencing the best local produce then a holiday in Porthleven is definitely for you. Tipped as Cornwall’s next food hotspot there are a huge number of eateries to enjoy from gastro pubs and cafes, bistros and brasseries through to fine dining restaurants with the focus on the fantastic local fish and seafood coming fresh from the boats in the harbour. If you’re lucky enough to visit in April during the Porthleven Food Festival you can try all sorts of local food and drink along with chef’s demonstrations, music and family entertainment. Or for a simple, yet delicious dinner at your Porthleven holiday cottage you could choose from the fabulous range of super fresh local fish at the award winning ‘Quayside Fishmongers’.
There’s lots to do whilst on holiday in Porthleven to work off all that delicious holiday food and drink. Head down to the beautiful golden sands of Porthleven Beach, some 3 miles long at low tide where children spend hours exploring the murky rockpool worlds full of shells and tiny sea creatures, while others take a dip in the clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean or flop on the sand.
For the more adventurous who’d like to explore the beautiful coastline and try a new water sport, local company Vertical Blue Adventures offers Stand Up Paddleboarding, Sea Kayaking and Coasteering trips for all abilities – a wonderful way to keep active and experience some beautiful coastal scenery and rare wildlife along the way. Surfing in Porthleven is some of the best in the UK with the reef close to the harbour a favourite with pro surfers, but it can be dangerous so if you’re not experienced its best just to watch from the harbour wall. Alternatively for fishermen young and old there are several companies in Porthleven offering fishing trips from the harbour along with sightseeing boat trips along the coast taking in hidden smugglers coves, abandoned tin mines, birdlife and fabulous views towards Mounts Bay.
Walkers and dog owners will enjoy the miles of footpaths criss-crossing the beautiful countryside surrounding Porthleven and especially the South West Coast Path which runs through the village with fabulous coastal walks in both directions.
A self-catering holiday cottage in Porthleven is also the perfect spot from which to explore this beautiful corner of Cornwall further. With the beautiful scenery of the Lizard Peninsula and Helford River combined with well known landmarks such as St Michael’s Mount to explore combined with everything this pretty Cornish village has to offer, your holiday in Porthleven will be one to remember.

When you visit Praa Sands you will be struck by how white the sand is, blinding in the sunshine and making the water a beautiful turquoise colour. This mile long sandy beach is backed with sheltering sand dunes and is easily accessible from the car park, perfect for families who can enjoy the shallow water, build sand dunes and bask in the sunshine while surfers can take on the surprisingly big waves out back.
A lovely unspoilt beach next door to Gunwalloe named after the silver dollars that were found here when the Spanish galleon the San Salvador was deliberately wrecked just offshore in 1669. Even if you can’t find any treasure today, Dollar Cove is still a gem of a beach for sunbathing, swimming can be good too if you stay close to shore but there are no lifeguards and it can get rough.
Owned by the National Trust Gunwalloe is a gorgeous little cove with a good sized stretch of sand back by dunes with a historic church tucked away at the northern end. The beach can be quite exposed to Atlantic swells meaning there are surfable waves here but swimming out of season is less safe. However in the summer there is a lifeguard service making it good family beach.
Also known as Black Pool Cove this is a family friendly beach with plenty of sand, volleyball, rockpools and a café for refreshments. Great for surfing and swimming with lifeguards on duty during the summer months. No dogs between 1st July – 31st August.
