Once described as the ‘loveliest village in England’ by poet Dylan Thomas, it’s no surprise that holidays in Mousehole are so popular. Largely untouched by time, this tiny fishing village sits on the shores of Mount’s Bay in south Cornwall, three miles west of Penzance.

If you’re dreaming of staying in a traditional Cornish fishing village, this is it. Granite fishermen’s cottages huddle around a harbour where colourful local boats sit waiting for the tide, and a maze of twisting cobbled streets offer up artists’ galleries, little cafes and independent shops selling sea-inspired gifts and trinkets.

Start each day of your stay with a stroll around the picturesque harbour to soak up the views of Mount’s Bay before deciding on the day’s adventure. If you’re spending your summer holiday in Mousehole, make a beeline for the safe sandy beach revealed in the harbour at low tide - popular with young families, or keep cool by taking a dip in Mousehole’s natural sea pool, hidden amongst the rockpools. Take a boat trip to spot the huge sea cave thought to be the source of the name ‘Mouse Hole’, or if you haven’t found your sea legs, join the South West Coast Path. One of our favourite stretches is from Mousehole to Lamorna Cove, a beautiful rocky beach where you can reward yourselves with a sea swim in crystal clear waters.

Speaking of beaches, no trip to Cornwall is complete without visiting its famous sandy bays and secret coves, and there are plenty of beaches near Mousehole to choose from. As well as the harbour beach and Lamorna, you’ll also find Salt Ponds, Porthcurno and Marazion nearby.

One of the best things about a self-catering holiday is the freedom it allows you for day trips, and several of Cornwall’s most loved attractions are just a short drive from Mousehole. Shop for super fresh fish in Newlyn, explore the fairytale castle of St Michael’s Mount or watch an open-air cliff top performance at the Minack Theatre. Learn about Cornwall’s mining heritage at Geevor Tin Mine, visit the art galleries of St Ives, then head for Land’s End Landmark for a family photo.

Holidays in Mousehole are equally magical during winter. Think sea storms watched from the comfort of a fire-lit cottage or cosy pub corner, and bracing cliff top walks wrapped up in woollies and wellies. Every December, the harbour is illuminated by an enchanting Christmas light display. The most famous festive scene in Cornwall, locals and visitors flock to Mousehole from far and wide for a dose of Christmas cheer.

Jubilee Pool
(3 miles)

First opened in 1935, the Jubilee Pool was created as a celebration of King George V’s Silver Jubilee. The pool is the largest and most celebrated sea pool in the UK, built into a triangular shape it withstands the ferocity of the Cornish seas while still being a very pleasant environment to bathe in. It contains about 5 million litres of sea water and no mechanical filtration and minimal chemical treatment making it a natural sea water bathing experience. The quality of the water is carefully maintained and water is replaced regullary, timed carefully with the outgoing and incoming tides. A wristband needs to be purchased to swim in the pool, adults are £5, under 16s are £3.50, and under 4s go free.
