Tucked away on the western edge of Whitsand Bay, with its seemingly endless stretch of soft golden sands, is the small Cornish fishing village of Portwrinkle. This feels like a place where time slows down, where life revolves around the sea and the seasons, and you can escape from modern life, enjoy great local food, walk, swim, explore, relax.

Portwrinkle, along with many other coastal villages in the area, was once part of the thriving pilchard trade and you can still see many of the pilchard cellars where the fish were stored and processed today. In times gone by the pretty harbour was lined with fishing boats landing their catch, and by night the area was the haunt of smugglers who used the surrounding rocky coves and cliffs for their illicit trade.

Today your holiday in Portwrinkle will find you out and about enjoying the many beautiful nearby beaches.  To the west of the harbour you’ll find the quiet, sandy crescent of Hoodny Cove and to the east is Finnygook Beach with its popular stretch of sand and shingle and a wealth of rockpools exposed at low tide.  Both have clear water for swimming and surfing and at Portwrinkle you’re within walking distance of the many other sandy beaches that line beautiful Whitsand Bay.

Eat out at a choice of local pubs and cafes including the Jolly Roger cafe on Finnygook Beach and the renowned Finnygook Inn serving excellent food, found just half a kilometre away in the nearby hamlet of Crafthole.  Enjoy the breathtaking coastal scenery walking the South West Coast path which runs through the village, or take to the waves and learn to surf at nearby  Whitsand Bay Surf School.  Other days out can be spent visiting The Monkey Sanctuary or historic Port Elliot House and Gardens both just a few miles away.   And if that’s not enough, just a short hop in the car brings you to Adrenaline Quarry home to a huge inflatable assault course, zip lines, go-carting and lots more fun for all the family.

So choose a holiday in Portwrinkle if you crave a break from it all surrounded by stunning, unspoilt scenery, panoramic sea views and fabulous beaches in this largely undiscovered part of Cornwall.

The Monkey Sanctuary
(5 miles)

(1)

Not perhaps what you might expect to find in Cornwall, The Monkey Sanctuary is a delightful opportunity to learn about its 36 inhabitants, all of whom have distinct characters and personalities.  An active rescue centre dealing with individuals that have often not had a very happy start to life, the priority is always their wellbeing, but it’s also an opportunity for guests to meet them and learn about the organization, explore the gardens and cultivated meadows, shop or relax in the café.  There’s also a play area for children, with views of the Cornish coast.  The sanctuary is closed on Fridays, but otherwise open from March to September (dates vary from year to year, so keep an eye on the website).  Prices start at £8.50 per adult and £5 for children, which entitles you to entry for a whole year.

Great place they do a lot of good work for the monkeys! It’s just sad to hear some of the stories of how they were kept!
