All you need to know
On the southern fringes of Bodmin Moor, where the hills relent to the gentle banks of the Looe valley, lies the handsome market town of Liskeard. Once an ancient manor belonging to the Earl of Cornwall, it was the tin-mining boom of the 19th Century that brought much wealth and prosperity into the town, reflected in some of Liskeard’s elaborate architecture.
Today, the high street - having been recently revived by retail doyen, Mary Portas - is lined by shops with pretty facades and flowerful hanging baskets. Showcasing Cornwall’s exceptional local produce, Liskeard boasts artisan bakers, delicatessens and farmers’ markets, all on hand to add some culinary flair to your self-catering holiday.
You can easily fill a day exploring this timeless town; the Liskeard Museum offers a fascinating window into an illustrious past, the medieval Stuart House is now a hub for arts and heritage, and the healing waters of The Well of St. Martin all add to the town’s rich cultural tapestry.
If it’s action and adventure you seek, the thrills and spills of Adrenalin Quarry and the mountain bike trails of Cardinham Woods are sure to set the pulses racing. The upland wilds of Bodmin Moor and the tranquil backwaters of the Looe Valley provide ample opportunities for walkers, with a cosy country pub never far away.
Cornwall consistently ranks as one of the most family-friendly holiday destinations in Europe, and with award-winning attractions such as the Eden Project’s spectacular rainforest biomes and the Arthurian castle ruins of Tintagel on offer, it’s easy to see why.
When you book a holiday in Liskeard, you’ll find several of the south coast’s most enchanting beaches and picturesque fishing villages all within a short driving distance. Alternatively, you might decide to board a carriage on the Looe Valley line and enjoy one of the West Country’s most scenic coastbound trips - the choice is yours!
Cornwall’s self-proclaimed ‘top go-karting centre’, Kartworld caters to all ages, with custom tracks and go karts for toddlers, children and adults. If you really want to test your skills, you can even participate in real races! There’s an 800-metre track (plenty of room for overtaking), long, fast, straight sections, and they have an exceptional safety record. You can even print out your lap times to take home. For adults meanwhile, there’s the chance to participate in the grand prix experience. It’s just 45-minutes from Newquay, refreshments and facilities are all available, as well as parking, and prices start at £12 for adults and £8 for children.

With the tag line ‘throwing people off cliffs since 2009’, what’s not to love about Adrenaline Quarry? Home of zip wires, coasteering, a giant swing and axe throwing they offer the complete adrenaline experience. Priding themselves on the number of adrenalin junkies, thrill seekers, bold mums and dads, toddlers, grandpas, little boys and girls, and old ladies that flock to South East Cornwall for the chance to fly down a zip wire or power a hovercraft solo around the quarry lake, they like to prove themselves as the place to go for outdoor adventures. Cornwall is home to a wealth of extreme sports and this is a wonderful place to start – they even offer hen and stag parties, or wedding parties for the truly dedicated.

We loved this place. Great value for money. We did the zip wire and the aqua park. Staff pleasant and helpful too. This place was one of the highlights of our holiday.

Highly recommend this as a day out. Our boys did Go Karting followed by the Aqua Park. Staff are so helpful and friendly, everywhere is clean and well organised activities. Dog Friendly, great picnic areas but food there very cheap.

A family-run business, this underground experience is open all year round for self-guided tours. Set in Quarry Wood, the 6.5-acre site encompassing ancient woodland and beautiful walks, is also home to three caverns and a spectacularly beautiful underground lake, hand created by slate miners. There’s a The Terrace Garden and Enchanted Dell for children, The Rum Store for underground concerts and events, and it’s licensed for weddings and civil partnerships. When you visit, remember The Caverns are at a constant 10°C, so jumpers are a good idea and flip flops are recommended.

We visited on a wet day in February. Truly enjoyed both the caverns and the woodland walk. Loved the little signs on the walk.
February 2022
Have visited this attraction in the past and wished to revisit. Unfortunately we were unable to to book on the same day as visit which prevented us from going, although at this time of year(late September) I doubt it was busy.
September 2021
Totally blown away. The ladies where so knowledgeable and very helpful. A marvellous place to visit x
July 2021
A great visit, staff very approachable and knowledgeable about the history and working of the mine. Woodland walks were an added adventure with fairies and dragons to spot on the way round and keep the kids interested.
August 2020
Easy parking with available toilets. Not too sure about disabled access, though,ok if you can actually walk but not too good if in a wheelchair from what i see. It is an interesting place though. Flash photography is not allowed as there are bats in the caves. The inside is actually quite pleasant and can be wet. Outside there are a a couple of interesting walks, mostly uphill,so be prepared. Its an interesting attraction that will be a couple of hours at least.
September 2019
We all enjoyed our visit here on a rainy day. It was good to see this mine.

Award winning dining in the pretty Cornish village of Duloe, offering a warm welcome in a relaxed atmosphere. Serving real ales, fine wines and simple honest cuisine made from the finest seasonal produce from the local area. Relax with a drink outside in the garden enjoying the lovely views across Looe valley, or cosy up in front of the fire.
The Plough, Duloe, Liskeard PL14 4PN (T: 01503 262556)
Who ever the lady was that met myself and grandson in the restaurant was I found to be quite insulting in the way she spoke to and was not very accomadating at all.
August 2021
GREAT VENUE ,LOVELY STAFF AND SUPERB FOOD, HADNT BOOKED,BUT FITTED US IN, HIGHLY RECOMMEND A VISIT EARLY DURING YOUR STAY AS OURS WAS TOWARDS THE END AND WOULD HAVE GONE ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION .
August 2021
Lovely meal. Felt very comfortable even with the Covid restrictions and social distancing. Food and service were excellent.
August 2020
Unfortunately with the restrictions they have put into place, eating out of polystyrene boxes is unacceptable. I would say the way they are operating is unacceptable. You eat there once and don’t go back. You are made to feel like a leper, definitely unclean. This is not the case in other pubs and restaurants nearby.
August 2020
We enjoyed a fabulous meal at the Plough during our stay in Trenant Park Cottages. The menu is good and they offer a good range of specials. The portions are hearty, and the food excellent quality. They are also dog friendly. I would highly recommend.

Millendreath Beach is a south facing beach at the foot of a wooded valley, in a sheltered cove with soft sand and lots of rock pools to explore at low tide. It’s connected to other nearby beaches by the South West Coast Path. Dogs aren’t allowed on this beach at any time of the year, and there is a reasonably sized car park a few minutes walk away. The beach is popular with families on holiday in Cornwall, and most of the surrounding area is occupied by a holiday park, so there are lot of facilities open to the public.
Fantastic beach with wonderful water sports facilities available, loved the sea kayaks!

Half a mile west of Looe, stretching along the coast, Hannafore Beach is a sandy, shingle bay with a rocky reef and views of St George’s Island. At low tide it’s brimming with rock pools, making it fun and games for the whole family to enjoy, and it’s a wonderful sun trap in summer months thanks to its south east facing position. Because of its location over the river, the beach never really becomes too busy, but equally there aren’t any facilities nearby. It’s popular with dog walkers as it’s amongst the few dog-friendly beaches in the area, and having explored you can extend your excursion to a stroll along the promenade or a potter around the coast path to the wonderfully scenic Talland Bay. There is roadside parking along the sea front above the beach, but it can be difficult to find a space. Alternatively, there is a large car park in West Looe, around 10 minutes away on foot.
Splendid views and dog accessible
July 2022

A small and pleasant grey sand beach with rocks exposed at low tide, Plaidy Beach is simply a nice place to visit and take in the scenery. There aren’t any facilities, and there’s no parking nearby so it’s one to reach on foot. There’s a slipway to the beach, but you will have to access it by walking along the coast path, parking at Millendreath or Looe and it’s worth keeping in mind that it’s quite steep from both directions. Millendreath is closer and the walk should take around 20 minutes. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round, so it’s a charming place to take them for a walk while you’re in the area.
Great to walk to at low tide on the beach or at high tide via the footpath. Great dog friendly beach.

A spacious, grey sand beach that’s popular with families, Seaton Beach enjoys views across the green, surrounding countryside and walks in Seaton Valley nearby. At low tide the beach stretches all the way from Seaton Beach to Downderry Beach. There are facilities close by and there is are two car parks as well as road parking, but it does get busy quickly in the summer. The beach is great for surfing, but do be wary of undercurrents. There’s also a café and beach shop close by as well. Dogs are welcome at the beach all year round.
Lovely clean beach where we could walk our dog
April 2023
Beautiful beach, safe and accessible for all.
August 2022

In East Looe, the beach sits directly in front of the old town, sheltered by the Banjo Pier and overlooked from the east by the hillside of Mount Ararat. A good family beach that has something for everyone, at low tide the sandy location is safe for swimming although it’s recommended you steer clear of the river mouth beyond the pier. Unfortunately dogs aren’t allowed on this beach at any time of the year, but Hannafore beach in West Looe is dog friendly. The beach backs on to a seafront walkway which runs its length all the way to Second Beach to the east, where it tends to be less busy and it’s good for snorkeling. As it’s in the centre of the town there are lots of facilities and cafes nearby, but in the summer it’s a very popular spot and parking can be tricky, with traffic prohibited during these months, so be prepared for a bit of a walk.
Some days quite busy but great facilities and loads of activities
August 2023
Great, despite the early season seaweed, the tractor cleared it very well.
April 2023
LOVE LOVE LOVE
July 2022
All of the beaches around Looe are worth visiting - and the coastal path is a must. Fuel for the hike? Not listed in the reviews is Sarah’s Pasties which has the best pasties (we ate a lot of pasties during the week!). They were also one of the few eateries in the area which could provide something for someone needing a gluten and dairy free diet. We were able to preorder pasties that met her dietary requirements.
February 2022

August 2021
I enjoyed the beach as it is very flat, which is important at 70, and I even had a paddle. The beach was very clean.
