Cotehele, National Trust

A Tudor house and estate with delightful collections, a garden and its own quay,  Cotehele was the ancestral home of the Edgcumbe family and is perched high on the hill above the River Tamar.  Decorated with tapestries, armour and lots of original features, the inside is testament to its adoring owners while outside there are formal terraces and a valley garden to get lost in, which includes a medieval stewpond and dovecote leading down to the river.  It’s peaceful and tranquil and a delightful place to explore while you’re visiting Cornwall, plus they have an excellent restaurant in the 15th century barn, serving homemade cakes, hot soups, wine, ale and lager.

Always a beautiful place to visit . A lot of steps in the house and a long walk to the quay side ( although you can drive the car down to the water) Excellent National Trust cafe and interesting art gallery in the court yard .

Charming house and gardens. Reasonable refreshments offering. Need to offer transport to and from quay INCLUDING visitors dogs!

Well organised in Covid 19 times. Some of the garden was shut off.

Tamar Valley Donkey Park

On the border of Devon and Cornwall, the Tamar Valley Donkey Park is home to donkeys, goats, sheep, pigs, rabbits and guinea pigs to feed and pet.  Guests can also visit Holly’s Café for hot and cold meals or a Cornish cream tea, there’s an indoor play barn as well as a soft play area, and lots of different parts of the park to explore and experience, including mini tractor rides.  Opening times are seasonal so do check the website before you visit, and prices start at £7.95 for adults and £7.50 for children.

In desperate need of visitors and funds - excellent inside play area for children . My 14 month old grandson was in seventh heaven ,sitting on the tractors and police cars .Enjoyed being able to hand feed the donkeys. The under 3 years area with the toys looked as though it needed a good clean .

Buckland Abbey

With over 700 years of history, Buckland Abbey is a magical place to visit with a story dating from the Cistercians who built the abbey and farmed the estate, to seafarers Grenville and Drake who influenced it as well as the country.  Explore meadows, orchards and woodlands, head to the cider house and peruse the herbaceous borders, there’s plenty to do whatever time of year you visit, and a restaurant for lunch and light snacks when you’re done.  Dogs are welcome in parts of the estate and it’s the perfect spot for summer picnics.
