When you book a holiday in Lostwithiel, you’ll find yourself right in the heart of Cornwall with easy access to the county’s best bits, from beautiful beaches to Bodmin Moor.

Set in a beautiful wooded valley on the banks of the River Fowey, Lostwithiel is an ancient stannary town, steeped in history. Dating back to the 12th Century, it was once the capital of Cornwall. Today you’ll find its streets filled with historic buildings, narrow alleyways and fascinating shops, with the new title of the antiques capital of Cornwall. You could easily spend several days of your holiday in Lostwithiel browsing the antique shops, delis, interior design boutiques and farmers’ market stalls, stopping for lunch at one of the many cafes, pubs and restaurants.

Just outside the town stand the remarkable ruins of Restormel Castle. A perfectly-circular structure, Restormel Castle is one of the most striking castles in Britain. The views from the castle are stunning, making it a lovely place for a walk. There are several stunning walks around Lostwithiel, through ancient woodlands, along riverbanks and across Cornish countryside. We love the gentle walk to Lerryn, a peaceful waterside village thought to be the inspiration for Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows.

Thanks to its central location, you can fill your holiday in Lostwithiel with days out to Cornwall’s famous attractions. Within a short drive you’ll reach the south coast’s ancient fishing villages and beautiful beaches, as well as the rugged uplands of Bodmin Moor. The majestic biomes of the Eden Project are only 10 minutes away, while Daphne Du Maurier’s hometown, Fowey, is also nearby.

With a busy events calendar, you can book a holiday in Lostwithiel at any time of year and you’ll always find plenty to do, from markets, fairs and auctions to carnivals and the Christmassy Dickensian Night.

Very good service and lovey food.

Closed when we visited after the Hall walk (mid- March)

March 2023

Unfriendly reception from lady behind bar and menu misleadingly promised home made tartare sauce with two of our dishes, but they came with sauce in sachets. When raised, we were told their chef had left. Not good enough.

Fowey Aquarium
(3 miles)

(2)

Fowey is a delightful, historic town in Cornwall and its aquarium is a chance to glimpse marine life from the Cornish coast up close.  Small but perfectly formed, the aquarium is brimming with opportunities to learn, playing host to a wide range of fish from the tiny gobies and shannies from the shallows, up to conger eels which inhabit deep wrecks.  First established in 1952, the aquarium still retains many of the original tanks. Fresh sea water is pumped in daily at high tide and the filtration is minimal, while the majority of fish are obtained locally from fishermen and anglers.  A joy for children and adults, opening times vary so check the website before you visit, and prices start at £4 for adults and £2.50 for children.

allow yourselves at least 10 minutes to ensure you see it all !

October 2021

What a cute little place this is! When the children were younger we stayed in Fowey every year, and the first thing they always wanted to do was visit the aquarium. It has a small touch pond as well. But - it is TINY - literally in one large room. So as long as you understand it is what it is, you won't be disappointed. A nice way to spend 30 mins when in Fowey but don't go just for this.

Lantivet Bay
(3 miles)

(1)

Between Polruan and Polperro along the coastal path, Lantivet Bay is only accessible at low tide when a sand and pebble beach is revealed.  Parking is in the National Trust car park at Polruan, where there are toilets as well, but there aren’t any facilities closer to the beach itself.  Dogs are allowed all year round, which is lovely as it’s the perfect beach to incorporate into a walk.  The National Trust recommends a charming circular route, starting in the car park and taking in 2.4 miles of beautiful bays and surrounding landscape, and giving you the chance to explore the area with its rich smuggling heritage.

Parked in the National Trust Car Park and took the footpath towards the beach. Beautiful views.

Polruan Back Beach
(3 miles)

In the heart of Polruan, Back Beach is not short of facilities and nearby shops and restaurants.  A pretty little beach that’s popular with families, it has beautiful views across the river to Fowey and is a lovely place to watch the world go by with all the boats pottering along in front of you.  It’s predominantly a sand beach, leading to a sheltered section of the river, so it’s good for swimming, but there aren’t any lifeguards around.  The only complication for access is that it’s very difficult to park in the village, and it’s a considerable walk down the steep hill from the car park at St Saviours, or a ferry ride across the river from Fowey.  Therefore, it’s best to combine a visit with a day exploring the village itself to make the most of it.

Had a wonderful time beautiful house

June 2022

Wonderful host and having both cottage and cabin was fantastic, like 2 holidays in 1!

July 2020

Quintole cottage is purely delightful. Its location is secluded and well off the usual tourist track. The garden is quintessentially county cottage and is tranquil and relaxing. The cabin was a fabulous addition to the holiday and made a great get away from the children. Great garden for dogs .

September 2019

The cottage is quintessentially English cottage so full of character and warmth. The owners have tastefully furnished it and the bed so comfortable. It is set in a very peaceful location with lots of space for our two boxers. The cabin is very modern and well equipped, and whilst there were only 3 of us on holiday our son who is partially sighted was able to have his own space which was a bonus.

May 2019

For anyone truly wanting to experience Cornwall, Quintole Cottage offers it all. A 300 year old cottage at the bottom of a narrow country lane in a small village gives the traveller a real taste of country life. The cottage is well equipped and comfortable and situated in a beautiful and eclectic garden surrounded by fields belonging to the adjacent farm. It was great to see the life on the working farm which is an ideal place to buy fresh eggs and cider. The property also houses a new cabin which is ideal for two. The location is ideal for day trips with easy access to Bodmin, Lanhydrock, St Austell, Looe and Polperro. Turn right when exiting the property and you are even only 5 minutes from the car ferry to Fowey. Overall a great week away and a nice taste of Cornish life, albeit a short one.
