Once described as the ‘loveliest village in England’ by poet Dylan Thomas, it’s no surprise that holidays in Mousehole are so popular. Largely untouched by time, this tiny fishing village sits on the shores of Mount’s Bay in south Cornwall, three miles west of Penzance.

If you’re dreaming of staying in a traditional Cornish fishing village, this is it. Granite fishermen’s cottages huddle around a harbour where colourful local boats sit waiting for the tide, and a maze of twisting cobbled streets offer up artists’ galleries, little cafes and independent shops selling sea-inspired gifts and trinkets.

Start each day of your stay with a stroll around the picturesque harbour to soak up the views of Mount’s Bay before deciding on the day’s adventure. If you’re spending your summer holiday in Mousehole, make a beeline for the safe sandy beach revealed in the harbour at low tide - popular with young families, or keep cool by taking a dip in Mousehole’s natural sea pool, hidden amongst the rockpools. Take a boat trip to spot the huge sea cave thought to be the source of the name ‘Mouse Hole’, or if you haven’t found your sea legs, join the South West Coast Path. One of our favourite stretches is from Mousehole to Lamorna Cove, a beautiful rocky beach where you can reward yourselves with a sea swim in crystal clear waters.

Speaking of beaches, no trip to Cornwall is complete without visiting its famous sandy bays and secret coves, and there are plenty of beaches near Mousehole to choose from. As well as the harbour beach and Lamorna, you’ll also find Salt Ponds, Porthcurno and Marazion nearby.

One of the best things about a self-catering holiday is the freedom it allows you for day trips, and several of Cornwall’s most loved attractions are just a short drive from Mousehole. Shop for super fresh fish in Newlyn, explore the fairytale castle of St Michael’s Mount or watch an open-air cliff top performance at the Minack Theatre. Learn about Cornwall’s mining heritage at Geevor Tin Mine, visit the art galleries of St Ives, then head for Land’s End Landmark for a family photo.

Holidays in Mousehole are equally magical during winter. Think sea storms watched from the comfort of a fire-lit cottage or cosy pub corner, and bracing cliff top walks wrapped up in woollies and wellies. Every December, the harbour is illuminated by an enchanting Christmas light display. The most famous festive scene in Cornwall, locals and visitors flock to Mousehole from far and wide for a dose of Christmas cheer.

A historic pub with good service and selection of drinks. Always busy and lively, and full of dogs. Efficient service and mostly friendly . Unfortunately our meal, on two occasions, has been a disappointment with all our choices not available, even at just 6.30pm, and one alternative offered totally over microwaved . Lesson learnt

March 2024

We were made welcome in both the restaurant and bar and enjoyed a really good meal here one mid week evening. Bar staff friendly and waiter service excellent. Table was reserved and we were not rushed. We had 4 different meals and desserts in our party and enjoyed all of them. Gluten free and vegetarian meals were available for 2 of us. Board games available in bar for visitors. Great view of harbour entrance. We recommend a visit.

Jubilee Pool
(3 miles)

(2)

First opened in 1935, the Jubilee Pool was created as a celebration of King George V’s Silver Jubilee. The pool is the largest and most celebrated sea pool in the UK, built into a triangular shape it withstands the ferocity of the Cornish seas while still being a very pleasant environment to bathe in. It contains about 5 million litres of sea water and no mechanical filtration and minimal chemical treatment making it a natural sea water bathing experience. The quality of the water is carefully maintained and water is replaced regullary, timed carefully with the outgoing and incoming tides. A wristband needs to be purchased to swim in the pool, adults are £5, under 16s are £3.50, and under 4s go free.

Mousehole is a delightful village. Beautiful scenery and walks, with some interesting shops and places to eat and drink. We ate very well at The Mousehole Deli and Kitchen on the seafront, which has an interesting menu, good coffee, and lovely staff. Bought great gifts at the weekly Craft Market too. Parking in Mousehole is quite limited!

Walked to Lamorna Cove from Castallack - it was a very nice walk on a lovely and sunny Sunday morning. The cove was very quiet and peaceful, not many visitors around. What a lovely beach. Golden/white sands. Beautiful clear waters. On a calm day great for paddle boarding, swimming and paddling. The beach does drop away quickly and gets deep. We have been when it is wavy too but feels safe with the lifeguards there during high season. Parking can get very busy so I suggest you get there early in the day if you want a space closer to the beach, there are some disabled bays. The spaces are small and if you have a big car I suggest you reverse in so it is easier to get out at the end of a busy day on the beach. There are 3 routes down to the beach. From the Minack which is steep and rocky with lovely views. A path from the car park which is a little uneven and down a slope. My mother managed to get her mobility scooter down this and the lovely Lifeguards let her leave it at the Lifeguard station. There are also some steps down to the beach at the Lifeguards hut.

This cottage is exceptional - sea views, comfort, cleanliness, attention from owners, parking, locality, and facilities.

October 2023

We have visited Carveth many times in the past and it was wonderful to return. Perfect location overlooking Mount's Bay, a very comfortable well equipped property. A lovely place to relax. So much to see and do in the area. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

August 2023

Great, spacious apartment with character and great views of the sea. Parking on site is a bonus. Friendly owners and a great location. We enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend the apartment.

July 2023

Totally wowed by the balconies. Went to the Paradise Gardens in Hayle for the first time. Bonded with several parrots! Also added on two extra days by staying at the Gurnards Head. Highly recommended as returning on a Monday is relatively traffic free.

We always love our stay and that’s why we book a holiday there every year. Simply the best, as far as we are concerned!

June 2023

We had a wonderful time at Carveth again, especially enjoying the new balcony! Thoroughly recommend Coast for lovely gifts and home decor.

April 2023

Had a wonderful stay loved the location. So great to see the seals and boats bobbing past the windows. 2 balconies fresh flowers milk tea coffee on arrival so welcome. Thank you to the host. There is a nice dvd on the shelf that tells you the history of Mousehole. Car parking handy but I was amazed by the local bus service. Will definitely be back

March 2023

This property gets better and better, especially with the addition of two balconies. We return year after year and find everything continues to be perfect. The owners keep the property to a very high standard, the view from large windows is wonderful, unusually for Mousehole there is a parking space, the bus service is frequent and reliable, there’s a good choice of places to eat, and activities to enjoy. Cannot rate it highly enough.

October 2022

It must be good - we’ve stayed at Carveth more times than we can remember.

Mousehole is just lovely.

September 2020

Our first holiday since the start of lockdown all those months ago. Warm and welcoming as ever. Thanks to Carveth and Cornwall in general for making us welcome, once again.

August 2019

The property is in a wonderful location. Just outside of Penzance, Newlyn and Mousehole. To have parking at the property was brilliant and our view from the living room was truly break taking. Our immediate aspect is of seal island so many a morning was spent watching the seals through the window. If you're up early enough you'll see one or two venture from their island over to the shore...and I was also lucky enough to see wild dolphins jumping through the water on two occasions, which was a very special sight. The property is within walking distance of Mousehole....there are some lovely shops and I highly recommend making The Ship Inn your local. The food, service and staff are brilliant and the pub itself has original features. There are steps just outside the property that take you down by the shoreline so you can walk into Mousehole by this route rather than the street way, which is great. Down the road is Newlyn where you can get boat trips around the coast...these are also available from Penzance. We would recommend Cormorant Cruises run by Mike. He's knowledgeable about the area and a lovely man. We went for an hour and would highly recommend his trips. In Penzance you have a whole host of shops, restaurants and bars. I love the Dolphin pub as it's very traditional looking, and is local to the shops. If you're looking for beaches....Praa sands are wonderful. Good facilities and places to get food and the parking was cheap too, but go early to get a spot. Sennen is lovely too, as is Porthcurno. If you're after culture then you have to visit the Minack Theatre - We've been twice and loved it both times with the sun set. Lands End is great (I personally didn't like the First/Last Inn pub which is located close by.) We went on a Thursday night to see the fireworks and have to say it was lovely. Just sitting on the rocks watching the sunset was theatre enough to be fair so the fireworks were just a nice ending to the evening. In terms of the property itself. It is perfect for a family of four. We didn't want for anything as the property is well equipped. There's not a lot of outdoor space (just a small balcony) but we didn't need it as you have the lovely shoreline to go and explore if you want to get out. The owners daughter came and introduced herself on our first day and was really lovely. The views - those views are wonderful. I could sit in the living room and watch the view all day. Seals, boats, ships, tides coming in and out and you can even see across to the Lizard and St Michael's Mount. We were very sad to leave and would highly recommend this property to anyone wanting to stay in this area. It's perfect in every way.

March 2019

Third time for us in Carveth, a wonderful cottage. Unlike last year with snow, this year was wall to wall sunshine, the views from the five sitting room windows over Mounts Bay were breathtaking. Carveth has everything with level entry and on site parking, carrying luggage is so easy, within 20 minutes we felt at home drinking tea looking first at the beautiful flowers on the table then the magnificent view. The audio system is excellent, the comfortable chairs great, the large flat screen TV is brilliant, the beds most comfortable, all in tastefully decorated surroundings, what more could one ask for? Hopefully we shall soon be back again.
