Within five miles of the Maritime town of Falmouth this detached self-contained wooden cabin sits snugly in a tranquil verdant valley less than a mile from the picturesque Helford village of Durgan. Set within the grounds of the owner's home, a gentle stream descends through the gardens to the shores of the Helford River.
The Cabin is located just on the outskirts of the pretty village of Mawnan Smith where local store and traditional thatched roof pub can be found. The waterside Helford hamlet of Durgan is within walking distance. The famous gardens of Glendurgan and Trebah are within a miles walk or short drive with exotic plants and extensive grounds leading down to the Helford River.
The popular visitor destination of Falmouth with the world renowned National Maritime Museum is just over 5 miles away. Cornwall's County City of Truro with its striking Cathedral and array of high street and local shops and cafes is well worth a visit and is only half an hours drive.

Description

The famous gardens of Glendurgan and Trebah are within a miles walk or short drive with exotic plants and extensive grounds leading down to the Helford River.
The popular visitor destination of Falmouth with the world renowned National Maritime Museum is just over 5 miles away. Cornwall's County City of Truro with its striking Cathedral and array of high street and local shops and cafes is well worth a visit and is only half an hours drive.

Once inside, the open plan accommodation is all on one level with pine clad throughout and attractive pine flooring. The property is comfortably furnished with television, easy seating and dining provision for two guests and the kitchen provides a pleasant space in which to prepare meals with an extensive on site inventory available.

A feature pine king 5ft bed with ample wardrobe and drawer space provided.

This fully insulated and double-glazed cabin has wall mounted electric panel heaters providing enough warmth all year round and dual aspect windows dressed with wooden Venetian blinds provide ample natural light and ventilation.
Set in a sunny South facing position with grassy areas for sunbathing and gravelled terrace with garden furniture and attractive Cornish stone and brick barbecue. Owners are happy to accommodate boats and trailers within the grounds of the property by prior arrangement. The grounds surrounding the Cabin are not fully enclosed so pets will need to be supervised when outside.
Perched on the edge of the world’s third largest deep water harbour, Falmouth is a beautiful and bustling town, steeped in maritime history. Colourful old captain’s houses perch above the water, while the sheltered harbour is filled with fishing boats and sailing yachts.
It’s no surprise that holidays in Falmouth revolve around the sea. Here you can wake up to the sight of boats sailing by and fall asleep to the sound of the waves. Seasoned sailors flock to Falmouth for the sheltered waters and stunning surrounding network of rivers and creeks, while there’s plenty of opportunity for beginners to learn the ropes at the local sailing schools, or explore the water on kayaks, boats and paddle boards. There are plenty of boat trips from Falmouth harbour, from Sealife Safaris and fishing trips to tranquil river cruises. One of our favourite things to do when on holiday in Falmouth is to hop on a ferry to St Mawes and spend the day exploring the pretty fishing village.
Back on dry land, there’s plenty to see and do. If you’re planning a family break in Falmouth, a visit to the National Maritime Museum is a must, as is a walk around Pendennis Castle, not only for the fascinating history but for the stunning, panoramic views. You’ll find the streets filled with interesting shops, cafés and galleries, plus there’s a busy calendar of events to choose from including Falmouth Week, an oyster festival and the quirky Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival.
Sit back and watch the waters lapping at the shore on one of Falmouth's four beautiful, spacious sandy beaches. Spend the day on Blue Flag Gyllyngvase beach, a popular sandy bay perfect for sandcastles, sunbathing, SUPing and sunset watching. If you love the idea of discovering your own secret cove, set off along the South West Coast Path and follow the banks of the nearby Helford River to find an idyllic picnic spot.
You won’t struggle to find great places to eat in Falmouth, from fine-dining fresh seafood restaurants to traditional fish and chip takeaways. A thatched traditional inn in the heart of Mawnan Smith just minutes from the South West Coast Path and a pretty stroll through the woods to Maenporth Beach. Here you can sample local ales and ciders in the raftered bar along with enjoyable food from light lunches to a evening menu packed full of fresh local Cornish produce. A great spot to stop off when walking or visiting nearby Glendurgan or Trebah Garden. Children and dogs welcome.

We ate here in the first couple of days of our stay. The staff were very friendly, as were the 'locals' and there is a good choice of seating areas and a varied menu. Food quality was very good and the service was prompt, all at a fair price. Would definitely go back. The Boar burger was lush !!

We stayed above the Ferryboat Inn and used it several times for an evening meal. Delicious food, good portions and service was friendly. Lovely pub on the River, food was very nice. One small thing to be aware of, we tried to book Sunday lunch only to be told they are booking around 2 weeks in advance! Just a heads up to book if you were planning a trip, I guess that must be an indication of the food! We enjoyed our mid week meal though, staff were friendly and efficient but unobtrusive. Food was good quality and reasonably priced. We’d be happy to return again.

Lovely, friendly pub with lots of dogs. We have been coming to The Ferryboat Inn for years. It was particularly enjoyable out of season, in January, although still sufficient numbers of locals and visitors to provide atmosphere. The hake chowder is particularly good!

We’ve been here a number of times previous to our most recent visit in October, and eaten on each occasion - hence we keep coming back..!! However on this occasion, we found the place (inside) totally lacking atmosphere. I guess that could be a hangover from the impact of the pandemic, but the staff were very lacklustre too - helpful, but they didn’t look like they were enjoying it. We have to say though, the food was as flavourful as ever - brilliant. Could have done with a little more adventure in the menu, as well as having some starters, but the quality was great.

Life's a Beach is on the top ten of my favourite places in the world. The setting is glorious, right on the beach with coastal walks available in both directions and it's open 7 days a week. The menu is perfect (in my book) and the food much more delicious than you might expect from a beach cafe. My only criticism is that it isn't open 24 hours a day!

An authentic, centuries old smithy which has been restored as a working forge, offering you the chance to watch a skilled blacksmith, sign-writer, silversmith and furniture maker as they work and browse their unique, hand-crafted products. Glendurgan Garden

Run by the National Trust, Glendurgan Gardens span over three valleys, filled with sub-tropical plants, exotic flowers and bright blooms. The peaceful gardens lead down to the unspoilt beachside hamlet of Durgan. Here you can take a rest and enjoy the stunning views of the Helford River, treat yourself to an ice cream, build sandcastles and watch the wildlife on the water. Glendurgan Garden offer a great day out for the entire family thanks to its impressive maze and Giant’s Stride rope swing, shop and teahouse, which serves traditional Cornish cream teas, light lunches and Children’s meals.

Gardens have been kept lovely but unfortunately there were staff shortages so long queues for food or ice cream. There were no plants to buy this year but that is hardly surprising. The staff all worked very hard to make the visit pleasant. They deserve a medal!

Trebah Garden

The subtropical valleys of Trebah Gardens offer a fantastic day out for the whole family. Four miles of footpath lead through canopies of exotic trees, plants and flowers which cascade down to a private, secluded beach on the Helford River. Here, you can take in the views, relax on the beach and enjoy a famous Roskilly’s Cornish ice cream from the Boathouse Cafe. There are adventure playgrounds and children’s trails to keep the youngest members of the family entertained, and dogs (on leads) are welcome in the gardens and on the beach all year round. As well as a visitor centre and shop, there’s a fantastic café, Trebah Kitchen, which serves locally sourced, seasonal food. Trebah is also home to an amphitheatre where you can catch music, dance, theatre and comedy performances.

Spend an afternoon exploring the stunning natural beauty of the Helford River with a boat tour helmed by an experience skipper. This memorable trip aboard The Hannah Molly – a traditional Cornish boat with room for 12 people – begins from Budock Vean. From here, you’ll travel along Port Navas Creek, past Helford Passage and Trebah Gardens, before crossing to Helford village and its surrounding creeks and inlets, including Daphne du Maurier’s Frenchman’s Creek.

Koru Kayaking Cornwall

Explore the Helford River from a sit-on kayak, paddling past sailing boats and ancient oak trees to Frenchman’s Creek – the inspiration for Daphne du Maurier’s famous romantic novel. This two-hour kayak tour is a great activity for the whole family, offering a unique way to explore the area whilst keeping active. No experience is necessary as Koru’s experienced guides will teach you kayaking techniques and safety information. Buoyancy aids are provided, and wetsuits are available to hire.

Durgan Beach

Owned by the National Trust, the scattering of cottages that make up the tiny village of Durgan form a pretty backdrop to this sand and shingle beach. With stunning views in both directions over the Helford River, Durgan has strong boating links and there is a slipway running down to the beach and moorings offshore. This south facing beach is a peaceful place to relax on the sand and watch the boats go by while children play in the rockpools. If you forget your bucket, spade or net you can borrow one from the National Trust Fish Cellar building which also sells teas, coffee and ice creams during the summer months. Like many of the beaches along the Helford, Durgan Beach is almost entirely covered during the highest tides so keep an eye on the tide times. There is no parking in Durgan itself, however, there is a carpark on the main road and signposted path to the village and beach. Dogs welcome all year round.
We visited a couple of times. It was just as good as ever. National Trust staff could not man the shop on the beach during one visit so we really missed our ice cream treat on that occasion!

Grebe Beach

A quiet and secluded shingle beach on the Helford River in between the villages of Durgan and Mawnan. Access is via a short woodland walk from Durgan and then a steep path down to the beach, which means it’s rarely crowded and ideal if you prefer peace and quiet to cafes and facilities, of which there are none. The water is safe for swimming here and there are rocky outcrops to explore and jump off. It’s worth bearing in mind though that while there is a large beach at low water, with the highest tides it’s completely covered. Dogs welcome all year round.
This beach would probably be a problem for pushchairs but is a little more secluded. We met a lot of dog walkers.

Helford Passage

This pretty sand and pebble beach dotted with boats pulled up on the sand, and backed by whitewashed cottages, is one of our favourites. Kids can play, splash in the water or explore the rockpools exposed at low tide, or the more adventurous can hire a kayak, paddleboard or small boat to explore the estuary. Sit back in the 300 year old Ferry Boat Inn for lunch and a cool drink before perhaps taking the ferry across the water to Helford Village (operating in summer months only). Alternatively there are wonderful walks in both directions with fabulous views where you can spot a wealth of birdlife and sometimes seals. This is my heaven or earth. We've been coming here for over thirty years. We've made some good friends, have lots of favourite haunts; love the river and the area. We brought our children here, they bring their children now. Always difficult to leave, always with a tear in my eye. Helford passage is unique, traditional and slightly old fashioned, in a good way! If you seek glamour and bling, go somewhere else. This is where children go rock pooling, learn to sail and water ski, catch crabs and jump off the pontoon into the sea, where they make sand castle and eat sand sandwiches on the beach, Where mums and grannies bring a pot of tea (or a glass of wine) to the beach to chat with friends, It's where families dress down rather than up, not really for 'strutting your stuff"! It is quintessentially English and throughly good for the soul! And the weather is often quite good!

Nansidwell Beach (Woodlands Beach)

Found between Maenporth and Mawnan Smith, this is a small, pretty sandy beach with some shingle and rocks accessed by footpath from the road. It’s a five to ten minute walk, meaning the beach itself is often quiet and uncrowded with lovely swimming. No amenities though and the walk isn’t suitable for buggies or those with limited mobility. Also known as Woodlands Beach. Dogs allowed all year round.
Bream Cove

A pretty sheltered cove in a secluded setting surrounded by low cliffs and woodland, Bream Cove consists of a sand and shingle beach dipping down to clear water with excellent swimming and snorkelling. At low water rock pools are exposed which children will love to explore and it’s possible to scramble over the rocks to the sandy beach next door at Gatamala Cove. There are no facilities here and no car park, but there are parking spaces on the nearby road between Maenporth and Rosemullion Head close to the Meuden Hotel, with access to the beach via footpath. Dogs welcome all year.

Food was good quality and reasonably priced. We’d be happy to return again.

We’ve been here a number of times previous to our most recent visit in October, and eaten on each occasion - hence we keep coming back..!! However on this occasion, we found the place (inside) totally lacking atmosphere. I guess that could be a hangover from the impact of the pandemic, but the staff were very lacklustre too - helpful, but they didn’t look like they were enjoying it. We have to say though, the food was as flavourful as ever - brilliant. Could have done with a little more adventure in the menu, as well as having some starters, but the quality was great.

The subtropical valleys of Trebah Gardens offer a fantastic day out for the whole family. Four miles of footpath lead through canopies of exotic trees, plants and flowers which cascade down to a private, secluded beach on the Helford River. Here, you can take in the views, relax on the beach and enjoy a famous Roskilly’s Cornish ice cream from the Boathouse Cafe. There are adventure playgrounds and children’s trails to keep the youngest members of the family entertained, and dogs (on leads) are welcome in the gardens and on the beach all year round. As well as a visitor centre and shop, there’s a fantastic café, Trebah Kitchen, which serves locally sourced, seasonal food. Trebah is also home to an amphitheatre where you can catch music, dance, theatre and comedy performances.

From here, you’ll travel along Port Navas Creek, past Helford Passage and Trebah Gardens, before crossing to Helford village and its surrounding creeks and inlets, including Daphne du Maurier’s Frenchman’s Creek.

Koru Kayaking Cornwall

Explore the Helford River from a sit-on kayak, paddling past sailing boats and ancient oak trees to Frenchman’s Creek – the inspiration for Daphne du Maurier’s famous romantic novel. This two-hour kayak tour is a great activity for the whole family, offering a unique way to explore the area whilst keeping active. No experience is necessary as Koru’s experienced guides will teach you kayaking techniques and safety information. Buoyancy aids are provided, and wetsuits are available to hire.

Durgan Beach

Owned by the National Trust, the scattering of cottages that make up the tiny village of Durgan form a pretty backdrop to this sand and shingle beach. With stunning views in both directions over the Helford River, Durgan has strong boating links and there is a slipway running down to the beach and moorings offshore. This south facing beach is a peaceful place to relax on the sand and watch the boats go by while children play in the rockpools. If you forget your bucket, spade or net you can borrow one from the National Trust Fish Cellar building which also sells teas, coffee and ice creams during the summer months. Like many of the beaches along the Helford, Durgan Beach is almost entirely covered during the highest tides so keep an eye on the tide times. There is no parking in Durgan itself, however, there is a carpark on the main road and signposted path to the village and beach. Dogs welcome all year round.
We visited a couple of times. It was just as good as ever. National Trust staff could not man the shop on the beach during one visit so we really missed our ice cream treat on that occasion!

Grebe Beach

A quiet and secluded shingle beach on the Helford River in between the villages of Durgan and Mawnan. Access is via a short woodland walk from Durgan and then a steep path down to the beach, which means it’s rarely crowded and ideal if you prefer peace and quiet to cafes and facilities, of which there are none. The water is safe for swimming here and there are rocky outcrops to explore and jump off. It’s worth bearing in mind though that while there is a large beach at low water, with the highest tides it’s completely covered. Dogs welcome all year round.
This beach would probably be a problem for pushchairs but is a little more secluded. We met a lot of dog walkers.

This pretty sand and pebble beach dotted with boats pulled up on the sand, and backed by whitewashed cottages, is one of our favourites. Kids can play, splash in the water or explore the rockpools exposed at low tide, or the more adventurous can hire a kayak, paddleboard or small boat to explore the estuary. Sit back in the 300 year old Ferry Boat Inn for lunch and a cool drink before perhaps taking the ferry across the water to Helford Village (operating in summer months only). Alternatively there are wonderful walks in both directions with fabulous views where you can spot a wealth of birdlife and sometimes seals. Back at the beach along with the pub there is a car park and toilets, ice cream kiosk and beach shop. Swimming is safe here but bathers should be aware of boats launching and general river traffic. Dogs allowed all year round.
Helford Passage is a beautiful spot on the Helford river. Enjoy a drink on the Ferryboat Inn terrace looking at the wonderful view.

Lovely spot on the river, no dogs allowed on the beach in summer but there' are some other beaches about 20 minutes walk away where they are allowed.

This is my heaven or earth. We've been coming here for over thirty years. We've made some good friends, have lots of favourite haunts; love the river and the area. We brought our children here, they bring their children now. Always difficult to leave, always with a tear in my eye. Helford passage is unique, traditional and slightly old fashioned, in a good way! If you seek glamour and bling, go somewhere else. This is where children go rock pooling, learn to sail and water ski, catch crabs and jump off the pontoon into the sea, where they make sand castle and eat sand sandwiches on the beach, Where mums and grannies bring a pot of tea (or a glass of wine) to the beach to chat with friends, It's where families dress down rather than up, not really for 'strutting your stuff"! It is quintessentially English and throughly good for the soul! And the weather is often quite good!

The beach is a mixture of sand, shingle and pebbles. Rock pools at low tide. Very safe for children. Beach covered at high tide. Ideal for boating enthusiasts and always plenty to watch. Very quiet location - only pub and kiosk.

Nansidwell Beach (Woodlands Beach)

Found between Maenporth and Mawnan Smith, this is a small, pretty sandy beach with some shingle and rocks accessed by footpath from the road. It’s a five to ten minute walk, meaning the beach itself is often quiet and uncrowded with lovely swimming. No amenities though and the walk isn’t suitable for buggies or those with limited mobility. Also known as Woodlands Beach. Dogs allowed all year round.
Bream Cove

A pretty sheltered cove in a secluded setting surrounded by low cliffs and woodland, Bream Cove consists of a sand and shingle beach dipping down to clear water with excellent swimming and snorkelling. At low water rock pools are exposed which children will love to explore and it’s possible to scramble over the rocks to the sandy beach next door at Gatamala Cove. There are no facilities here and no car park, but there are parking spaces on the nearby road between Maenporth and Rosemullion Head close to the Meuden Hotel, with access to the beach via footpath. Dogs welcome all year.
