2024 Eco-Friendly Upgrade: Solar Panels and Battery Storage Now Powering Nearly Half of Property's Electricity in 2024

Within a short walk of the beaches at Duporth and Porthpean and half a mile from the famous 18th century harbour side village of Charlestown, a world heritage site, this former gate house to the Charles Rashleigh Estate at Duporth has been lovingly and sympathetically restored. The woodland walks from the lodge take you to a resident only private beach of Duporth so it will be relatively quiet and a perfect base for a beach day.

Duporth Lodge provides a comfortable family home furnished to a very high standard and has been awarded both a Visit England 4* Gold and Green Tourism Silver Awards with a newly installed type 2 electric car charging point and electricity energy supply.

The property retains many of the original features and is a great base to explore the many villages, attractions, walks and beaches the South Coast has to offer.  Duporth Lodge is ideal too for an out of season stay for couples in need of some much needed R&R with the adaptable property able to provide a cosy and comfortable base for two.

Charlestown only a 3 minute drive with its restaurants, tea rooms, pub, hotel and Shipwreck & Heritage Centre is the nearest village. The larger town of St Austell, 1.8 miles, has a good choice of supermarkets and shops, a railway station, bowling alley, cinema and 4 golf courses nearby.

Porthpean beach three quarters of a mile has a sailing club and the fishing harbours of Fowey & Mevagissey are only 8 and 6 miles respectively. The Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan are within a 10 - 15 minute drive. Newquay Airport and the North Coast are within 30 minutes.

As part of the owners continuous drive to make Duporth Lodge as sustainable a holiday experience as possible we are delighted to have installed a 9 x Sunpower 415 W solar panel system. This 3.735kWp array working alongside a GivEnergy 5.2kWh battery was installed in February 2024 and is predicted to provide over 48% of Duporth Lodge’s electricity needs. The panels have been placed discretely on the garage roof with the battery and inverters tucked away in the corner of the garage. Guests arriving at Duporth Lodge in their electric cars could be powering their cars with Cornish sunshine!

Set only a few miles inland from the sparkling waters of St Austell Bay, this old mining town is now one of Cornwall’s largest. A holiday in St Austell combines the beaches, estuaries and fishing harbours of Cornwall’s gorgeous south coast with a fascinating industrial heritage and several of the county’s most popular attractions.

Of course, one of the main reasons for visiting Cornwall is its many beautiful beaches, and when you book a holiday in St Austell you’ll be spoilt for choice. From snoozing in the sand to swimming in the sheltered waters, Porthpean, Polkerris, Duporth, Par Sands and Carlyon Bay all offer stunning sand and clear, bright turquoise water. The coastline is perfect for watersports, from SUPing and kayaking to sailing and boat trips, and there are several places where you can hire equipment and book lessons.

There’s no better way to explore the stunning surrounding coastline than the South West Coast Path; you can spend every day of your stay in St Austell discovering somewhere new. Follow in Captain Poldark’s footsteps as you stroll around Charlestown’s unspoilt Georgian harbour. Visit the pastel-painted streets of Fowey with its many shops, galleries and waterfront eateries, or watch fishermen land their daily catch in Mevagissey’s colourful harbour before dining in one of the many pubs and restaurants, or indulging in a traditional fish’n’chip takeaway.

Away from the coast, there’s plenty to keep you entertained during your holiday in St Austell, no matter what the weather. St Austell is an important mining town, as it was here where William Cookworthy discovered china clay. It’s hard to miss the towering pits of clay, known as the ‘Cornish Alps’, while the Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum is definitely worth visiting. If you’re fond of real ale, take a tour of St Austell Brewery and enjoy a pint or two of ‘Proper Job’.

The famous tropical rainforest and mediterranean biomes of the Eden Project are just outside St Austell, and are sure to be a holiday highlight. There’s also a cycle and walking route from the town to the Eden Project, following the Clay Trails, and you can hire bikes locally. Also nearby are the beautiful Lost Gardens of Heligan, which were rediscovered and restored after years of being buried under brambles. Today, there are 200 acres to explore, filled with plants, wildlife, secret pathways, ancient woodlands and sculptures, as well as a rare breeds farm.

With everything from beaches, watersports and coastal walks to museums, gardens and industrial heritage, holidays in St Austell have it all.

There is parking for three cars and when the driveway is gated the grounds are enclosed.

DUPORTH LODGE ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

Environmental sustainability is central to our thinking at Duporth Lodge. We have tried to make Duporth as sustainable a holiday option as we can and we will continue to strive in that direction in the future, making the environment central to any future developments here. The electricity and gas at Duporth are supplied by Ecotricity who are the UK’s greenest energy provider. They helped us with the cost of installing the electric vehicle charging point here at the Lodge. All our lighting is provided by LEDs which use less electricity and last for up to 20 years, therefore reducing waste. When we first acquired Duporth the garden was laid mainly to gravel with very few plants. In 2019 we made extensive improvements to the outside environment. We created several new garden beds and have introduced a wide variety of shrubs and habitats to attract local wildlife. Looking round the garden you will now find nest boxes, roosting pouches and a bug box.We do not use weed killer, fungicide or pesticide in the garden.

With your help we recycle cardboard, glass, metal, paper and plastic. We only use ecological cleaning products at Duporth. The toilet rolls and kitchen roll we provide are made from recycled paper. The liquid hand soap, washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets are all ecological brands. You may notice small touches at Duporth such as clothes pegs made from bamboo, a dishwasher brush with replaceable head, a dustpan and brush made from recycled plastic or placemats made from sustainable cork. The tea, coffee and sugar we provide to welcome you are organic and Fairtrade. The jam and cream are from local producers.

We try to support local companies in a variety of ways. The blankets in the sitting room are by Atlantic Blankets from Perranporth, the glass pictures and coasters are by Jo Downs from Launceston and all the downstairs rugs and cushions are made entirely from recycled plastic bottles by Weaver Green based in Devon. Recently we have worked with Go Jute who are based in St Austell; they designed and manufactured our Duporth shopping bags made from organic & Fairtrade jute. We have installed a smart Hive heating system which both enables guests to ensure their own comfort and allows us to easily keep the heating to an absolute minimum when the property is vacant, greatly reducing carbon emissions for Duporth. Additionally we have fitted Radflek energy saving radiator heat reflectors to the rear of all external radiators, reducing wasted energy by 45%. We have had a water meter fitted as a first move towards making ourselves more aware of the water that is used at Duporth. As water consuming items need replacing we will seek the most water efficient options we can. We have already replaced the two shower heads at Duporth with new Ecocamel shower heads which use 40% less water than standard heads. We support local environmental charities The Eden Project and The Cornwall Wildlife Trust through membership

Ideas for making your stay more environmentally friendly

Leave the car – Try walking or cycling around Duporth. We provide a collection of maps and books with planned walks and we have put together a selection of cycle routes in one of our folders. Leaflets for nearby Pentewan Cycle Hire can also be found at Duporth.

Switch Off Lights – Yes our light bulbs are very efficient, but you can reduce our carbon emissions still further by switching them off when you are not using them. This also extends their life and reduces waste.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – Please recycle any packaging waste by using the labelled recycling bags and boxes located in the garage. Please keep the washing-up bottle, toilet cleaner bottles and dishwasher tablet box as we refill these from bulk containers.

Be Water Wise – Please use water wisely. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth & only fill the kettle with as much as you need.

Respect Nature – Please respect the woodlands and the countryside. The beautiful woodland and coastal area around Duporth is home to many birds and animals so please try not to disturb their habitats.

Local Produce – Cornwall produces many fine ingredients. You will find a selection of local restaurants and retailers that we recommend in one of our folders, please support them.

Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre
(Less than a mile)

(1)

An all-weather attraction where children go free, Charlestown Shipwreck Centre takes you back two hundred years, when the area was a tiny fishing village with no harbour.  As trade boomed in nearby St Austell, it became clear that there was need for a proper harbour, and local businessman by the name of Charles Rashleigh set about making plans – hence the name (Charles’ town).  Today the Shipwreck and Heritage Centre charts the history of this corner of Cornwall, including the ship wrecks off the nearby coast.  There are trails, a visual audio theater, the RNLB Amelia which was last stationed at Scarborough, and a German armoured dress diving suit, which was used in the 1920/30's, amongst other pieces of history.  There’s also a Kids’ Corner and plenty to see and do for the whole family.

Interesting for those prepared to engage with the stories presented. Very informative guidebook with plenty to read. The upstairs restaurant was far from great (we just went in for a coffee which was... unpleasant). We would say to ignore the discount which comes with the museum entry ticket and try one of the nearby cafes instead.

There is an interesting selection of books and games and plenty to do along the coastline.

June 2023

It’s the last day of our holiday here in Cornwall and we loved the countryside, the people, the sights- everything. We spent an amazing time at Duporth Lodge and are sure to be back soon. It’s the little details that made us smile many many times: the beautiful Hobbit doors (as my son,11, calls them), the bookcase with Cornwall themed books, the selection of spices and herbs, the garden shed with all the equipment for the beach… everything is full of love and you can feel it in every room. Thanks so much for this amazing stay, we loved every minute of it.
