A true Cornish idyll, Mevagissey is one of the oldest fishing ports in the county and was once the centre of Cornwall’s pilchard fishery – and it still boasts a working harbour. When you choose a holiday in Mevagissey, you will capture the true essence of Cornwall: enchanting history, stunning coastal views and fresh seafood.

This small but bustling fishing village has lots to pack into your holiday, from the harbour-sited aquarium in the old lifeboat house displaying locally caught fish to a model railway, with tiny trains chugging along tiny tracks. From the top of Polkirt Hill there is a great view over the higgledy streets, the harbour and the yachting pool. Mevagissey also has a good selection of shops to browse as well as an excellent folk museum where you can learn about the local history. Reward yourself after all that sightseeing by buying the catch of the day from the harbour front for a fish supper back at the cottage, or sample it in one of the pubs or restaurants in the town.

Beaches are never far off in Cornwall and this beautiful stretch of coastline is peppered with golden sands and peaceful hidden coves. From Mevagissey, head to Pentewan for swimming, surfing and sunbathing, Vault to scale the imposing, 400ft-high headland of Dodman Point – the highest point on the south coast – and Portmellon for quieter, sheltered sands. The coastal footpath also offers some lovely walks.

There are many opportunities for sea angling in the area and fishing trips can be taken from the harbour. Take a boat trip to nearby Fowey with its bustling town, glorious beaches and stunning estuary teeming with wildlife. Further adventure can be found at the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project and boating historians will be fascinated by Charlestown.  The Shipwreck Centre, itself located in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a substantial collection of private artefacts, from ancient Egyptian finds to spoils from the Mary Rose.

If you’re looking to uncover a real part of Cornwall’s stunning history and coastline as well as relax and enjoy yourself, a holiday in Mevagissey will not disappoint.

Lost Gardens of Heligan
(Less than a mile)

Heligan is one of the most mysterious estates in England. Lost to the brambles of time since the outbreak of WW1, this Sleeping Beauty was re-awakened in 1990 to become Europe’s largest garden restoration project. Today Heligan’s 200 acres are a paradise for the explorer, wildlife, plant lover and garden romantic.

Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre
(5 miles)

(1)

An all-weather attraction where children go free, Charlestown Shipwreck Centre takes you back two hundred years, when the area was a tiny fishing village with no harbour.  As trade boomed in nearby St Austell, it became clear that there was need for a proper harbour, and local businessman by the name of Charles Rashleigh set about making plans – hence the name (Charles’ town).  Today the Shipwreck and Heritage Centre charts the history of this corner of Cornwall, including the ship wrecks off the nearby coast.  There are trails, a visual audio theater, the RNLB Amelia which was last stationed at Scarborough, and a German armoured dress diving suit, which was used in the 1920/30's, amongst other pieces of history.  There’s also a Kids’ Corner and plenty to see and do for the whole family.

Interesting for those prepared to engage with the stories presented. Very informative guidebook with plenty to read. The upstairs restaurant was far from great (we just went in for a coffee which was... unpleasant). We would say to ignore the discount which comes with the museum entry ticket and try one of the nearby cafes instead.

September 2023

we enjoyed our stay very much, it was very comfortable and well furnished.

July 2023

Our stay was fantastic, made even more enjoyable by the amazing accommodation at The Clock House.

August 2022

The property is lovely (we have stayed here several times).

April 2022

As stated above the points raised are very small and in no way spoilt our enjoyment of the place which we would happily recommend to others. Not sure how it would work or cost implications but include a pass for Lost Gardens as you are there already.

August 2021

A very comfortable and well-equipped holiday home, our third visit! Gardens of Heligan are a delight, wonderful being on site. Must also mention Lobbs’s Farm shop for delicious fresh produce. We didn’t stray far but spent a couple of days at Vault beach which we love (near Gorman Haven), and visited Charlestown, and enjoyed coastal run to St Mawes. Would thoroughly recommend Salamander restaurant in Mevagissey.

May 2021

The Clock House is a spacious, comfortable cottage with good facilities in a lovely setting next to the Lost Gardens of Heligan. The neighbours are friendly and the housekeeper was very helpful. We had a great week and would definitely recommend it.

October 2019

We have been visiting The Clock House for approximately 4 years and have never been disappointed. It is always clean and well appointed.
