Perched on the edge of the world’s third largest deep water harbour, Falmouth is a beautiful and bustling town, steeped in maritime history. Colourful old captain’s houses perch above the water, while the sheltered harbour is filled with fishing boats and sailing yachts.
It’s no surprise that holidays in Falmouth revolve around the sea. Here you can wake up to the sight of boats sailing by and fall asleep to the sound of the waves. Seasoned sailors flock to Falmouth for the sheltered waters and stunning surrounding network of rivers and creeks, while there’s plenty of opportunity for beginners to learn the ropes at the local sailing schools, or explore the water on kayaks, boats and paddle boards. There are plenty of boat trips from Falmouth harbour, from Sealife Safaris and fishing trips to tranquil river cruises. One of our favourite things to do when on holiday in Falmouth is to hop on a ferry to St Mawes and spend the day exploring the pretty fishing village.
Back on dry land, there’s plenty to see and do. If you’re planning a family break in Falmouth, a visit to the National Maritime Museum is a must, as is a walk around Pendennis Castle, not only for the fascinating history but for the stunning, panoramic views. You’ll find the streets filled with interesting shops, cafés and galleries, plus there’s a busy calendar of events to choose from including Falmouth Week, an oyster festival and the quirky Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival.
Sit back and watch the waters lapping at the shore on one of Falmouth's four beautiful, spacious sandy beaches. Spend the day on Blue Flag Gyllyngvase beach, a popular sandy bay perfect for sandcastles, sunbathing, SUPing and sunset watching. If you love the idea of discovering your own secret cove, set off along the South West Coast Path and follow the banks of the nearby Helford River to find an idyllic picnic spot.
You won’t struggle to find great places to eat in Falmouth, from fine-dining fresh seafood restaurants to traditional fish and chip takeaways. Why not buy some fresh fish and take it back to your cottage and cook up a feast in the comfort of your own kitchen? Or better still, catch your own on a fishing trip!

May 2023
Excellent pub - great food and service would pop in again.
October 2021
The staff were brilliant but the food was just average, I'm afraid. We would not be likely to go there again.
June 2021
We ate here in the first couple of days of our stay. The staff were very friendly, as were the 'locals' and there is a good choice of seating areas and a varied menu. Food quality was very good and the service was prompt, all at a fair price. Would definitely go back. The Boar burger was lush !!
August 2019
We ate in The Red Lion and found the food to be well cooked and a decent portion. Service was prompt and well worth a visit.

Really enjoyed visiting this pub, relaxed, doggie friendly, great food, friendly staff and my favourite beer on tap! Would recommend booking if you want to eat around 6 - 7pm
July 2023
We stayed above the Ferryboat Inn and used it several times for an evening meal. Delicious food, good portions and service was friendly. As it was warm and sunny, we were able to enjoy the gorgeous view over the river too. It's a hidden gem of an area with the added bonus of a good eating and drinking place
June 2023
Great atmosphere - great menu - great location
June 2023
Very good food from here and nice staff - we had a few meals and also drinks
June 2023
Had a great meal here - great menu with super specials using local ingredients every day.
June 2023
Lovely pub on the River, food was very nice. One small thing to be aware of, we tried to book Sunday lunch only to be told they are booking around 2 weeks in advance! Just a heads up to book if you were planning a trip, I guess that must be an indication of the food! We enjoyed our mid week meal though, staff were friendly and efficient but unobtrusive. Food was good quality and reasonably priced. We’d be happy to return again.
February 2023
Lovely, friendly pub with lots of dogs. We have been coming to The Ferryboat Inn for years. It was particularly enjoyable out of season, in January, although still sufficient numbers of locals and visitors to provide atmosphere. The hake chowder is particularly good!
January 2023
Fab great food
July 2022
Amazing food and drink options and lovely service however opening hours should ideally be extended and more food options at lunchtime would make it even better. It was brilliant when they did the takeaway options as well as main food options
June 2022
The Ferryboat Inn has it all, stunning location, good atmosphere and great food at reasonable prices.
November 2021
Very friendly and efficient staff. Food delicious. Setting perfect.
October 2021
Stunning pub right on the river - top quality food and service - one of the best fish and chips out there!!!
October 2021
We’ve been here a number of times previous to our most recent visit in October, and eaten on each occasion - hence we keep coming back..!! However on this occasion, we found the place (inside) totally lacking atmosphere. I guess that could be a hangover from the impact of the pandemic, but the staff were very lacklustre too - helpful, but they didn’t look like they were enjoying it. We have to say though, the food was as flavourful as ever - brilliant. Could have done with a little more adventure in the menu, as well as having some starters, but the quality was great.
October 2021
Unfortunately we were not able to visit during our time in Helford Passage as there were long queues. This may get better when people start to go abroad again. Food on offer looked good.
September 2021
Charles, manager, very helpful & professional. Good food. Many thanks
September 2021
Best fish in batter I have ever had!

January 2020
Great food. Excellent service. Very friendly helpful staff.
September 2019
Faultless! We have seen the FBI through many incarnations over the decades. I think the current crew is quite possibly the best. Excellent food and AMAZING service sometimes in very testing conditions, not all customers are nice! We eat there frequently, sometimes daily, less so this year because the weather was not so good so had a few away days, but we ate breakfast, excellent innovation!, lunch and supper. Congratulations and thanks to you all
August 2019

The Cove Bar & Restaurant
(2 miles)
(39)
An upmarket bar and restaurant with striking views over Maenporth Beach and out to sea and great food to match. The restaurant is welcoming and relaxed whether you’re looking to celebrate something special, are hungry after a day at the beach or are walking the South West Coastal Path and pop in with a dog in tow.
The Cove Bar & Restaurant, Maenporth Beach, TR11 5HN (T: 01326 25 11 36)
We didn't eat in The Cove this time as the menu itself made it uninviting. On our previous visits to Maenporth we often ate breakfast there and sometimes had afternoon tea or an evening meal there. It is a wonderful setting. This time however the menu was much changed. There is no longer breakfast (aside from coffee and croissant) or afternoon tea, and for lunch and dinner the menu was very short on choice. And, probably more importantly, the prices had become prohibitive.
October 2023
Rather overpriced not impressed
August 2023
Best meal I’ve ever had
August 2023
Wonderful lunch at The Cove. The food was excellent and the view of the beach was lovely.
August 2023
Did not visit this restaurant due to price of food.
July 2023
Service was a little slow for just drinks but a beautiful view over the beach.
August 2022
The best view for any restaurant ever. Great food. The children’s food needs input from someone who knows about children. Portions are so large and so fancy that they are intimidating for children. Halve the portions and stick a paper umbrella in it and most children would be happier.
July 2022
Lovely location and really good food. Staff attentive and very friendly. The only downside was dessert was late arriving but had been noticed by manager who adjusted bill accordingly
June 2022
Amazing food and drink, staff were very attentive, friendly and efficient.
June 2022
Its a shame that this was rarely open and was temporarily closed even for drinks while staff prepared for a 'large group'
June 2022
A great location - on your doorstep - very good atmosphere - a bit pricey and limited menu but very enjoyable
May 2022
We visited The Cove several times during our stay and thoroughly enjoyed each experience. Staff could not be more welcome and professional. The food was superb.
November 2021
Enjoyed a great family meal at the Cove. Food and service excellent. Well worth a visit
November 2021
We always visit the Cove but we're amazed at the cost this year. Nearly £5.00 for sides is a joke. The food was good but not the cost.
September 2021
Only managed a drink here as restaurant was full and you had to pre-book. Menu looked good although fairly expensive
September 2021
Lovely location, shame about the over-priced menu for the standard of food!
September 2021
We had a wonderful meal here this Summer. Friendly and relaxed yet with the quality of a first class restaurant. And of course a divine location.
September 2021
Booked up 2 weeks in advance so wasn't able to use the restaurant, book in advance if you want to eat here. Had drinks on the terrace on a couple of occasions and that was very pleasant and friendly staff
August 2021
Gorgeous restaurant and good with lovely staff
August 2021
Had an evening meal here and a lunch during our week’s holiday, the food is amazing, staff are excellent and the place has a lovely atmosphere. Would highly recommend
July 2021
Tried to book numerous times but couldn’t get in
July 2021
I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone, awful! The male guy who i believe is the mgr is very rude..
July 2021
Excellent location and good range of options on the menu.
July 2021
Staff generally friendly, the owner however was rude and aggressive. A shame as the location is great, as was the vibe before being verbally abused by the bully owner…
July 2021
Overpriced particularly drinks. £11 for gin and tonic and £11 for a cocktail.
July 2021
Overpriced
June 2021
Disappointed with our visit on Sunday 23rd May. No better than pub food but labelled and priced as fine dining.
June 2021
We had a meal at the Cove ,first time under new management ,and it has improved ,and was good value with excellent service
November 2020
Excellent ambience, but you do have to book early even in late September.
October 2020
Having dined at the Cove many times we were slightly disappointed. We always have Sunday lunch there but there was no traditional roast. We feel that the portions are smaller but the cost higher and the new owners are concentrating on fine dining rather than traditional Cornish fare. The staff were friendly and helpful. We were not the only people enquiring about Sunday roasts.
October 2020
Small portions so don’t go if you are hungry! Great service but check out the cancellation policy as this is extortionate if you don’t turn up or call on the same day to cancel.
September 2020
We had a very nice cooked breakfast on our final day. However, we were disappointed that staff did not allow us to sit out on terrace to have an early evening cocktail. It was completely empty but we were told that they were keeping it empty in case diners wished to move out there later. They allowed us to have a takeaway (£30 for 4 drinks !!). We didn't find staff friendly or welcoming and were disappointed that our 1st night tradition of a cocktail on the terrace wasn't possible - even though it was empty at that point. It is under new management - we did not eat lunch or dinner so can't comment on food.
August 2020
Birthday meal treat near end of holiday!!!! Childrens portions were a great size and was even told on asking that the chef could tweak the meals if needed!!!!
August 2020
Gorgeous view, great service, delicious food and good value
July 2020
two excellent meals for two branches of the family. Lovely friendly service and delicious food
November 2019
Food was lovely but felt that it was not as good as previous visits
October 2019
Excellent meal and location.
September 2019
We ate in The Cove one evening as a special treat. Food is excellent and staff very welcoming. A wonderful setting and certainly well worth a visit.
June 2019
Amazing food , location and atmosphere.

Glendurgan Garden
(Less than a mile)

Run by the National Trust, Glendurgan Gardens span over three valleys, filled with sub-tropical plants, exotic flowers and bright blooms. The peaceful gardens lead down to the unspoilt beachside hamlet of Durgan. Here you can take a rest and enjoy the stunning views of the Helford River, treat yourself to an ice cream, build sandcastles and watch the wildlife on the water. Glendurgan Garden offer a great day out for the entire family thanks to its impressive maze and Giant’s Stride rope swing, shop and teahouse, which serves traditional Cornish cream teas, light lunches and Children’s meals.

No dogs allowed
September 2023
We would love to visit Glendurgan, but cannot do so until they become dog-friendly. In contrast, Trebah gardens nearby allow dogs and they do not appear to cause any problems.
May 2023
Brilliant place run by the National Trust - rhodos, etc were finished so do book your holiday for end of April, spring Bank holiday if its spring flowering stuff you want to see -
May 2022
Beautiful gardens. Enjoyable walk down the gully to the village and beach. Then the steep walk back! Lovely sub tropical plants, nice cafe at the top
May 2022
Beautiful gardens with lovely cafe and second hand bookshop.
October 2021
Gardens have been kept lovely but unfortunately there were staff shortages so long queues for food or ice cream. There were no plants to buy this year but that is hardly surprising. The staff all worked very hard to make the visit pleasant. They deserve a medal!
September 2021
Trebah Garden
(Less than a mile)
(9)
The subtropical valleys of Trebah Gardens offer a fantastic day out for the whole family. Four miles of footpath lead through canopies of exotic trees, plants and flowers which cascade down to a private, secluded beach on the Helford River. Here, you can take in the views, relax on the beach and enjoy a famous Roskilly’s Cornish ice cream from the Boathouse Cafe. There are adventure playgrounds and children’s trails to keep the youngest members of the family entertained, and dogs (on leads) are welcome in the gardens and on the beach all year round. As well as a visitor centre and shop, there’s a fantastic café, Trebah Kitchen, which serves locally sourced, seasonal food. Trebah is also home to an amphitheatre where you can catch music, dance, theatre and comedy performances.
Trebah Garden, Mawnan Smith, Nr Falmouth TR11 5JZ (T: 01326 252200)
Beautiful garden, exotic planting with a Gigantic Gunnera passage which was a surprise. Gorgeous private beach and interesting plant shop.
July 2023
We walked to these gardens - so beautiful! Had a lovely coffee on arrival in the garden cafe and also visited the beach for an ice cream
June 2023
Beautiful garden!
July 2022
Excellent garden and the beach the icing on the caje
May 2022
Honestly the most amazing garden I've ever seen. Stunning.
April 2022
Disappointed that we were not able to visit as they were only open on select days and you had to book your visit beforehand. We hope this will get better in the future as we missed being able to to fit a visit in this time.
September 2021
Stunning gardens with a beach at the end. Great shade on those days when it is blisteringly hot. Also contains two small playgrounds for little ones.
July 2021
something for everyone even on a damp day
November 2019
A must to see, great for gardeners and photographers alike. Do check café times when you first go in.

Helford River Cruises
(Less than a mile)
(2)
Spend an afternoon exploring the stunning natural beauty of the Helford River with a boat tour helmed by an experience skipper. This memorable trip aboard The Hannah Molly – a traditional Cornish boat with room for 12 people – begins from Budock Vean. From here, you’ll travel along Port Navas Creek, past Helford Passage and Trebah Gardens, before crossing to Helford village and its surrounding creeks and inlets, including Daphne du Maurier’s Frenchman’s Creek.
Helford River Cruises, Budock Vean Hotel, Mawan Smirh TR11 5LG (T: 07941 027732)
On demand service. We used the river boat service to travel from the Ferry Boat Inn on one side of the river to explore the sleepy and picturesque village on the other. Happy to take under 5s too.
July 2021
Amazing company - our daughter and friend hired kayaks and boats, and despite running the latter aground, the staff were good humoured and helpful. (Sorry folks, but we'll be back next year!).

Koru Kayaking Cornwall
(Less than a mile)
Explore the Helford River from a sit-on kayak, paddling past sailing boats and ancient oak trees to Frenchman’s Creek – the inspiration for Daphne du Maurier’s famous romantic novel. This two-hour kayak tour is a great activity for the whole family, offering a unique way to explore the area whilst keeping active. No experience is necessary as Koru’s experienced guides will teach you kayaking techniques and safety information. Buoyancy aids are provided, and wetsuits are available to hire.
Koru Kayaking (T: 01872 552255)
Durgan Beach
(Less than a mile)
(1)
Owned by the National Trust, the scattering of cottages that make up the tiny village of Durgan form a pretty backdrop to this sand and shingle beach. With stunning views in both directions over the Helford River, Durgan has strong boating links and there is a slipway running down to the beach and moorings offshore. This south facing beach is a peaceful place to relax on the sand and watch the boats go by while children play in the rockpools. If you forget your bucket, spade or net you can borrow one from the National Trust Fish Cellar building which also sells teas, coffee and ice creams during the summer months. Like many of the beaches along the Helford, Durgan Beach is almost entirely covered during the highest tides so keep an eye on the tide times. There is no parking in Durgan itself, however, there is a carpark on the main road and signposted path to the village and beach. Dogs welcome all year round.
We visited a couple of times. It was just as good as ever. National Trust staff could not man the shop on the beach during one visit so we really missed our ice cream treat on that occasion!
September 2021
Grebe Beach
(Less than a mile)
(1)
A quiet and secluded shingle beach on the Helford River in between the villages of Durgan and Mawnan. Access is via a short woodland walk from Durgan and then a steep path down to the beach, which means it’s rarely crowded and ideal if you prefer peace and quiet to cafes and facilities, of which there are none. The water is safe for swimming here and there are rocky outcrops to explore and jump off. It’s worth bearing in mind though that while there is a large beach at low water, with the highest tides it’s completely covered. Dogs welcome all year round.
This beach would probably be a problem for pushchairs but is a little more secluded. We met a lot of dog walkers.
September 2021
Helford Passage
(2 miles)
(15)
This pretty sand and pebble beach dotted with boats pulled up on the sand, and backed by whitewashed cottages, is one of our favourites. Kids can play, splash in the water or explore the rockpools exposed at low tide, or the more adventurous can hire a kayak, paddleboard or small boat to explore the estuary. Sit back in the 300 year old Ferry Boat Inn for lunch and a cool drink before perhaps taking the ferry across the water to Helford Village (operating in summer months only). Alternatively there are wonderful walks in both directions with fabulous views where you can spot a wealth of birdlife and sometimes seals. Back at the beach along with the pub there is a car park and toilets, ice cream kiosk and beach shop. Swimming is safe here but bathers should be aware of boats launching and general river traffic. Dogs allowed all year round.
Helford Passage is a beautiful spot on the Helford river. Enjoy a drink on the Ferryboat Inn terrace looking at the wonderful view.
September 2023
Lovely spot on the river, no dogs allowed on the beach in summer but there' are some other beaches about 20 minutes walk away where they are allowed.

A beautiful and quiet area to just sit back and relax with a pint from the pub ????????
July 2020
Lovely little beach, with rock pools and a pub right on the edge. Helford River Boats offer some great water activities as well.
August 2019
This is my heaven or earth. We've been coming here for over thirty years. We've made some good friends, have lots of favourite haunts; love the river and the area. We brought our children here, they bring their children now. Always difficult to leave, always with a tear in my eye. Helford passage is unique, traditional and slightly old fashioned, in a good way! If you seek glamour and bling, go somewhere else. This is where children go rock pooling, learn to sail and water ski, catch crabs and jump off the pontoon into the sea, where they make sand castle and eat sand sandwiches on the beach, Where mums and grannies bring a pot of tea (or a glass of wine) to the beach to chat with friends, It's where families dress down rather than up, not really for 'strutting your stuff"! It is quintessentially English and throughly good for the soul! And the weather is often quite good!

The beach is a mixture of sand, shingle and pebbles. Rock pools at low tide. Very safe for children. Beach covered at high tide. Ideal for boating enthusiasts and always plenty to watch. Very quiet location - only pub and kiosk.

Nansidwell Beach (Woodlands Beach)
(2 miles)
Found between Maenporth and Mawnan Smith, this is a small, pretty sandy beach with some shingle and rocks accessed by footpath from the road. It’s a five to ten minute walk, meaning the beach itself is often quiet and uncrowded with lovely swimming. No amenities though and the walk isn’t suitable for buggies or those with limited mobility. Also known as Woodlands Beach. Dogs allowed all year round.
Bream Cove
(2 miles)
A pretty sheltered cove in a secluded setting surrounded by low cliffs and woodland, Bream Cove consists of a sand and shingle beach dipping down to clear water with excellent swimming and snorkelling. At low water rock pools are exposed which children will love to explore and it’s possible to scramble over the rocks to the sandy beach next door at Gatamala Cove. There are no facilities here and no car park, but there are parking spaces on the nearby road between Maenporth and Rosemullion Head close to the Meuden Hotel, with access to the beach via footpath. Dogs welcome all year.

Yes, we did. The weather was fine and the cabin gets a lot of sun and is in a quiet and peaceful position - ideal for sitting reading after a day out, and enjoying an evening drink.

May 2023
Excellent pub - great food and service would pop in again.

We ate in The Red Lion and found the food to be well cooked and a decent portion. Service was prompt and well worth a visit.

The Ferry Boat Inn

Dating back 300 years, The Ferry Boat Inn sits on the edge of the beach at Helford Passage. Thanks to its waterside position, you can look out over one of the most beautiful views in Cornwall whilst enjoying a drink or delicious meal. The Ferry Boat serves a tasty menu of homemade pub classics, alongside fresh, locally caught seafood dishes. Outside, there’s a large terrace with plenty of seating, perfect for long sunny days and warm, summer’s evenings, and come winter there’s a cosy open fire. Children and dogs very welcome.

January 2020
Great food. Excellent service. Very friendly helpful staff.
September 2019
Faultless! We have seen the FBI through many incarnations over the decades. I think the current crew is quite possibly the best. Excellent food and AMAZING service sometimes in very testing conditions, not all customers are nice! We eat there frequently, sometimes daily, less so this year because the weather was not so good so had a few away days, but we ate breakfast, excellent innovation!, lunch and supper. Congratulations and thanks to you all

June 2019

Glendurgan Garden, Mawnan Smith, Nr Falmouth TR115JZ (T: 01326 252020)

June 2021

Lovely little beach, with rock pools and a pub right on the edge. Helford River Boats offer some great water activities as well.
