Porthpean House is a 19th century, grade 2 listed property and enjoys the most splendid sea views being uniquely placed with private access just 50 yards above the sandy sheltered beach at Porthpean and only 1 mile from the 18th century harbour side village of Charlestown, via the South West Coast Path. Retaining much of its period charm, this traditionally furnished detached grade 2 listed house as featured in the 2013 Richard Curtis film, About Time is an ideal base for exploring the many sandy beaches of St Austell Bay, the fishing port of Mevagissey and the pretty sailing town of Fowey.

All the amenities of Charlestown are within 1.5 miles by road including a selection of pubs, restaurants, cafes, children's playground, quayside and small stoney beaches. St Austell, 2 miles has a larger selection of shops and amenities and for the garden lovers the Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan are within a 15 minute drive.

The bustling coastal villages of Mevagissey & Fowey are 5 and 8 miles respectively, there is bike hire at Pentewan and there are several golf courses close by.

From a level gated gravel drive with parking for six to eight cars the front door opens into the entrance porch with flagstone floor and part glazed doors into the panelled reception hall with a slate floored boot room and W.C. with hand basin.

The ground floor accommodation comprises; an impressive light drawing room with a stripped timber floor, open fire, Broadwood grand piano and sea views with French doors leading out to the garden and sea views. Next to this room, there is a cosy snug room television, timber floor and views across the garden. The carpeted office is a charming quiet room with a desk overlooking the garden to enjoy a bit of relaxation. The dining room has a large table to seat up to 20 guests with a library of books surrounding it.

There are two kitchens at Porthpean House; the main kitchen off the main hall has all the usual appliances for your convenience as well as a table and chairs to seat up to 10 people, with a further small laundry just off the kitchen with 2 small steps leading to it. From the dining room, there is a rear hall which leads to the Blue Kitchen which is also a fully fitted kitchen and has seating for up to 8 people. Combined kitchen appliances across both kitchens comprise two fridge/freezers, two dishwashers, one washer/dryer plus an additional tumble dryer, two microwaves, 2 electric hobs and ovens.

Just beyond the second kitchen, there is a ground-floor twin bedroom with a television. A few steps lead up to a separate shower room W.C. with a basin. Also from the rear hall is a spacious games room; an additional light reception room with an ornamental fireplace, 50 inch TV, table football and sea views. French windows and a step lead out to a gravelled path and lawn to the front.

There are two carpeted staircases with balustrading to the first floor with eleven traditionally and comfortably furnished bedrooms, 2 en-suite WC bathrooms and a further 4 bathrooms (3 with WC) and one family shower room. 5 bedrooms to the front have stunning sea views - please refer to the floor plan pictures. Bedrooms to first floor composition is 3 superking, 1 king, 4 twins and 3 singles.

Please note, due to the age and exposed coastal location this iconic property occupies, inevitably, there will be some decoration imperfections.

This property is efficiently heated via central heating.

The lawned garden extends to 10 acres with the main lawn on the seaward side with a rough path giving direct access to the beach at Porthpean below, the lawn then extends to the side of the property with gravel paths connecting the various smaller areas of the garden. The garden is not fully enclosed and therefore pets and children will require supervision. Porthpean has a sailing club, outdoor education centre and a family friendly beach with a seasonal dog ban. Garden furniture and barbecue provided.

The enchanting village of Porthpean lies on one of the most scintillating stretches of the Cornish south coast, interlaced by roaming cliff paths and secret coves.

Expect nothing but blissful beach days and quiet, starry nights when you book a Porthpean holiday and experience the Cornish coastal idyll. Nestled into the leafy shoresides, this charming coastal community embraces both Higher Porthpean and the neighbouring seaside hamlet of Lower Porthpean, both falling within the parish boundaries of St Austell Bay.

A holiday in Porthpean places some of the region’s loveliest walking trails right at your doorstep - primrose lanes and exhilarating coastal paths waiting to be explored. Follow the old beach road to the gleaming, turquoise waters of Porthpean Beach, a beautiful sheltered bay, ideal for young families and well-known for its soft sands, rock pools and gentle swimming conditions.

A little further east along the sparkling coastline, following the South West Coast Path, lies the historic Georgian port of Charlestown, which during the 18th Century was bustling with clay boats and pilchard luggers, but is better-known today as an iconic film and television location, having provided the nostalgic backdrop for such swashbuckling heroes as Captain Ross Poldark and Horatio Hornblower.

Porthpean, one of the south coast’s hidden gems, is the perfect setting for your family holiday with a plethora of sights and attractions all within a close radius. Discover the Lost Gardens of Heligan, walk beneath the Eden Project’s incredible rainforest biomes, take a trip to the picture postcard Mevagissey Harbour, or travel further down the coast towards the stunning Lizard Peninsula to cross the cobbled causeway of St Michael’s Mount seen by many as ‘the jewel in Cornwall’s crown’ - there’s so much to see and do when you book a break in Porthpean.

Whether you find yourselves whiling away an hour or two in a pretty waterside pub garden or enticed by the coastal tracks to the quiet shore of a secret smuggler’s cove, the allure of the south coast of Cornwall is truly hard to beat.

Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre
(Less than a mile)

(1)

An all-weather attraction where children go free, Charlestown Shipwreck Centre takes you back two hundred years, when the area was a tiny fishing village with no harbour.  As trade boomed in nearby St Austell, it became clear that there was need for a proper harbour, and local businessman by the name of Charles Rashleigh set about making plans – hence the name (Charles’ town).  Today the Shipwreck and Heritage Centre charts the history of this corner of Cornwall, including the ship wrecks off the nearby coast.  There are trails, a visual audio theater, the RNLB Amelia which was last stationed at Scarborough, and a German armoured dress diving suit, which was used in the 1920/30's, amongst other pieces of history.  There’s also a Kids’ Corner and plenty to see and do for the whole family.

Interesting for those prepared to engage with the stories presented. Very informative guidebook with plenty to read. The upstairs restaurant was far from great (we just went in for a coffee which was... unpleasant). We would say to ignore the discount which comes with the museum entry ticket and try one of the nearby cafes instead.

December 2022

We came to celebrate my husbands 60 th birthday with family and friends the house was amazing all amenities were exceptional and there was plenty of room for all the family as we had 2 kitchens plenty of bathrooms and the wonderful open fire in the piano room we are already looking at booking this house again for my 60th . This has given us so many happy memories and anybody thinking of booking this house needs to just book it they will not be dissapointed

May 2019

We had such an incredible week assisted by the weather and enjoyed so many aspects of the house and gardens as well as the proximity to the beach for some bracing morning swims. I particularly appreciated you showing us around the gardens and sharing the history of the house and your family. We felt very honoured to be the guardians even for a very short while. The furnishings were so relaxing and comfortable and I was amazed we squeezed 26 around the table! Discovered some new talents within our friends of piano playing and one of the party laid on a marvellous treasure hunt around the local area bemusing some locals as mad groups of folk ran around the villages. Brilliant fun. It would be wonderful to think we could repeat the experience again one day.
