Often called Cornwall's forgotten corner the Rame Peninsula with its quaint villages sheltered by tidal creeks and wild coastline looking out to the Atlantic is a wonderful location for families, couples and pet owners looking for adventure, history or simply wanting to relax.

Emelle is a former Pilchard Palace and school located in the heart of Cawsand a sleepy village steeped in history overlooking Plymouth Sound and featured in the period drama Mr Turner. Enjoy time wandering the narrow streets with colourfully painted cottages perched on the water's edge and stroll across to neighbouring Kingsand. These historic villages have a thriving community with shops, galleries and places to stop and enjoy some local produce, a drink or simply sit and watch the world go by. Emelle is only 30 yards from the beach, the bakery and village tea room and 50 yards from the pub and restaurant.

If you are looking for lazy days by the water's edge, then you won't have to walk far! A path cut into the rocks from the cottage gives you direct access onto Girt beach which welcomes dogs all year and backed by the iconic Clock tower which was built to commemorate the coronation of King George V, there are two further beaches within 200m of the property one in Cawsand and one in Kingsand. Whitsand Bay is only five miles from the village so pack your beach gear and explore this three mile stretch of sand.

Walking is a big part of a holiday in this part of Cornwall and you are not short of inland and coastal walks to choose from. Join the South West Coast Path and walk to Penlee Point with glorious views of Rame Head to the south or head north to Mount Edgcumbe Park, gardens and stately home overlooking Plymouth Sound.

Only a short ferry ride by car from Torpoint is Plymouth, alternatively a foot passenger service departs from Mount Edgcumbe and during the summer months you can take the foot passenger service from Cawsand beach. Plymouth offers a wide range of shopping, entertainment and restaurants with the Theatre Royal and National Marine Aquarium a must see if you hop over the water.

Entrance

Approached form Garrett Street and set behind an arched stone wall, Emelle is an end of terrace period cottage with three railed steps leading down to the front door opening into a small entrance vestibule off which are two staircases connecting you to the ground, lower ground, first and second floor accommodation.

Bathroom

Taking the carpeted staircase down which has eight steps you will find a fully tiled family bathroom W.C. with a corner shower, basin, bidet, bath and heated towel rail.

Living Room

There are two comfortable sofas arranged before the picture window with a wood burning stove to the side; this is the perfect place to unwind, relax and enjoy time together.

Kitchen / Dining Room

From the living room a metal spiral staircase with twelve carpeted open tread steps lead down to the lower ground floor and a kitchen / dining room with a wooden floor. You will be drawn by two windows providing you with a wonderful picture of the sea and coastline. To one side is a modern fully fitted kitchen with electric oven and induction hob, and opposite is a smart dining table and eight chairs. Kitchen appliances include, dishwasher, fridge, microwave,

Utility

From the kitchen, a glazed door with a couple of steps lead down to the shared corridor giving access down onto the beach and to an outside utility / storage room with a basic shower, basin and WC and steps up to a utility area with washing machine, tumble dryer and an additional fridge / freezer; there is also room to hang wet beach gear. It is important to note that this utility / storage room is basic in its construction and decoration and as such please expect there to be some dust.

**From the entrance hall. a carpeted staircase with six steps leads to the first floor and two comfortably furnished bedrooms.

Bedroom 1

The master bedroom takes full advantage of the sea view with a small enclosed balcony, there is a kingsize bed with a sofa  and an en-suite shower room W.C. with a corner shower, hand basin and heated towel rail.

Bedroom 2

The second bedroom has two zip link 2'6 single beds which can be put together to create a comfortable king.

Bedroom 3

A further carpeted staircase with fifteen steps takes you to the second floor and a comfortably furnished attic bedroom in the eaves with a double and a single bed, dual aspect velux windows and an en-suite shower room W.C. with a shower cubicle, small basin and heated towel rail.

Traditional seaside charm and stunning scenery in an unspoilt, secluded part of Cornwall: it is easy to see why holidays in Cawsand are the county’s best-kept secret. This is the bit of Cornwall you never hear about, which most holidaymakers all nip past on the A38 for pastures pricier and posher. But just over the Tamar Bridge on the wild Rame Peninsula nestles the fishing village of Cawsand and its neighbour, Kingsand. Straight out of Enid Blyton, the pretty holiday homes on Cawsand’s higgledy streets face out over the blue expanse of Plymouth Sound.

Head down to the long sand-and-shingle beach for great picnicking, swimming, rockpooling and paddleboarding – watch out for peregrines and buzzards and even the occasional pod of dolphins. You should be able to lure the family off the beach with the promise of an indulgent cream tea at The Old Bakery, and a well-timed trip could include the chance to take their one-day sourdough bread-making course.

Cawsand Bay shelters many a boat and, in the past, attracted smugglers as it was so close to Plymouth. Navy vessels also moored here, giving rise to the several pubs, which serve good food, such as the Halfway House and the Devonport.

The extraordinary beaches at Whitsand Bay, accessible only via a steep cliff path, are perfect for surfing, rockpooling and sandcastle building. Head to Mount Edgcumbe and Port Eliot for beautiful grounds to idle in and catch the Cremyll Ferry over to Plymouth to explore the naval town’s Royal William Yard, with its collection of independent boutiques, galleries and restaurants.

If walking is preferred, breathtaking coastal pathways take hikers south, around the stunning Rame Head, with its sparkling sea views. On a clear day, keep an eye out for birds, seals and the iconic Eddystone Lighthouse, still keeping a watchful lookout over boats in the surrounding waters.

A warm climate, clean air and the smell of the sea: this is what holidays in Cawsand are made of.

There are two car parks for you to park your car, one in Kingsand which is approximately 100m from the cottage or Cawsand car park approximately 300m from the cottage.

- During storms and winter months, an external shutter may be in place in front of one of the kitchen windows

- Car parking is in the public car park in Kingsand or Cawsand

- One pet welcome

- LOYALTY DISCOUNT available with this property

- This accommodation is suitable for up to 7 people plus 1 infant

Whitsand Bay
(4 miles)

A 3 mile stretch of perfect sand located between Rame Head and Portwrinkle, this is possibly one of the best beaches in this part of Cornwall. It is worth noting though that there are dangerous rip currents, and although there is lifeguard cover May-September, swimming here can be dangerous.  Access to the beach is via steep cliff paths, unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushcharis from car parks at either end. The easiest access is from the car park near Tregantle Fort leading to Long Sands beach. The other car park is located near Sharrow Point and leads down to Freathy and Tregonhawke Beach.  Dog allowed all year round.

November 2023

We enjoyed our stay, this is the second time we’ve holidayed in Cawsand.

October 2023

We have just spent the most fantastic week staying in Emelle. It left us completely speechless when we arrived from the most amazing views to the fabulous welcome back that was left for us. The owner was just amazing with her attention to detail for our arrival and when we had a small issue during our stay it was literally resolved within minutes. Neither of us wanted to come home and we actually re-booked it whilst we were there for our daughter and son-in-law next year as we knew that they would love it as much as we did. For ourselves, we will definitely be back.

October 2023

Really enjoyed our stay. Fantastic location and Elizabeth was really helpful when we had a problem with the baby stairgate

September 2023

Love, love love this place.

August 2023

We loved our stay so much, we tried to book for next year but was booked, we will be back, beautiful setting, stunning views, furniture was nice, we all loved it

April 2023

Fabulous property in a wonderful location.

November 2022

Love this place

October 2022

Loved our stay

April 2022

Direct access to the beach with the facilities in the utility room was fabulous. Rame head is a great coastal walk. Breakfast at Maker heights shouldn't be missed, or The Devonport Inn, sat outside with refreshment

April 2022

Emelle is a lovely house, spacious and comfortable with a fantastic view! A bonus is having access to the beach via the internal corridor which we made very good use of to take advantage of the sunny weather. We have already booked for October and hope to do so again for next Easter just as soon as we know school term dates. Our fave pub is obviously the Devonport but had good food in all the others too, and were glad that the Old Bakery opened up just in time for us to have breakfast there, another treat! Can’t recommend Emelle and Kingsand highly enough!

February 2022

We really enjoyed the stay - it was a beautiful location and hugely comfortable for us all. We’d go back in a heartbeat!

November 2021

Emelle is a beautiful property and exceeded our expectations on arrival. Having visited the village on a number of occasions staying in other properties we always said we wanted to stay there and finally got around to it! Liz the owner was fantastic, in contact with us re arrival information and answered a few questions we had after arrival too! The property is very homely and cosy and i was hard pushed to move away from the window seat all week! Kingsand/Cawsand is one of our favourite places and we love to just switch off, slow down and recharge and we certainly did this in comfort at Emelle! Everything we could have needed and more with the most stunning views! I woke every morning early to just watch the sunrise from the balcony. It’s the little things! We rebooked again for next year on our first night there and we can’t wait to return xx

October 2021

Kingsand and Cawsand is so pretty and an idyllic Cornish village with 5 of the best pubs around. We loved our time at Emelle cottage and have already booked for next year. The house is fantastic and so comfortable - one of the best we have ever stayed in. The owner is also lovely, amenable and very responsive. All in all, a perfect holiday.

October 2021

Just returned from a week in Kingsand staying in Emelle and wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed it. The house is lovely, well furnished and really comfortable and homely. A welcome pack awaited in the kitchen which was a lovely touch and very welcome. the sea views are fabulous and I spent a lot of time sitting on the window seat in the living room just watching the waves. So relaxing. Highly reommended! I have already booked for March and can't wait to be there again.

June 2021

Amazing property with outstanding sea views, located in an idyllic Cornish village.

May 2021

We really enjoyed our week at Emelle. The house was lovely with wonderful views and really warm and comfortable. We will return again without a doubt!

August 2020

"We have recently returned from a week staying at Emelle in Cawsand. We were a family of 4 adults and two children. We found Emelle to be a perfect holiday house and together with beautiful weather we all agreed it was one of our best holidays ever. The house has plenty of room for everyone with stunning views from each room. It was very well equipped and even had body boards that the children could use. We had our own access to the beach from the house which enriched our stay. We loved being close to the sea and listening to it at night as we fell asleep. Emelle is perfectly situated in the centre of the village with beautiful coastal walks in either direction. We hardly had need to take out the car, making a very relaxing holiday. I would highly recommend this house for a family holiday and would love to return one day"

March 2020

Emelle was the most wonderful holiday cottage - being so restful and peaceful and with the most AMAZING view, right on the water. I found myself able to sit for hours on the window seat, watching the waves. Perfectly positioned in the village for shops, pubs and coastal path walks. I enjoyed every minute of my holiday and will be back

January 2020

What can I say about Emelle other than it is absolutely perfect. We spent a week here in January, we had mixed weather including some T-shirt days! The cottage is outstanding, a complete home from home, the decor and attention to detail is second to none. It's the perfect place for a break away any time of the year, if the weather is not so good you can sit in the window seat in the lounge watching the changing tide. The kitchen is so well equipped, we spent a lot of time cooking and had every single utensil that you would have at home. If cooking isn't your thing there is very good food on offer at the local pubs (the Devonport is one of our favourites). Would we return; yes in a heartbeat, Emelle offers everything you could wish for.

August 2019

Emelle - 5 stars. This is a wonderful, breathtaking property. It is extremely clean and very comfortable, the living room window overlooks the beach... just beautiful. We arrived on the Saturday afternoon and was greeted with a lovely welcome basket that also included sweets for the children. every room was comfortable and had everything you needed, everything was thought of. The stairs from the kitchen straight down to the beach was amazing - you really could not get any closer to the beach. We were all speechless when we arrived and had a wonderful holiday - the owner is lovely and extremely helpful. I could not rate this property high enough..... loved it.

June 2019

This property certainly gives you the WOW factor when you walk in. The love care and attention to detail that has been bestowed on the house is evident throughout and you immediately feel relaxed and ready for your holiday. The view from the lounge window overlooking the Sea and Plymouth Sound is simply stunning. Once the back door was opened the dogs were immediately on the beach and into the sea - they loved it. The beach is dog friendly all year round. There are plenty of walks nearby, we particularly enjoyed the walk through the Edgcumbe Estate to Cremyll, lunch at the Edgcumbe Arms (dogs allowed) and then a bus back to Cawsand! Another interesting day out is the Cawsand Foot Ferry from Cawsand Beach to Plymouth Sound you are in Plymouth within 40 minutes, without using your car or having to find parking spaces The village has several pubs that have fabulous menus, also a convenience store and post office. We had a lovely Crab Sandwich at The Rising Sun and the mussels at The Devonport are amazing. We went with our 2 sons and their partners. Each couple had a double room and own bathroom, the house was spacious and comfortable for all of us. Fun evenings were spent playing the games that are provided in the property. We intend to keep returning to this beautiful house and have already booked again.

May 2019

When we arrived we were blown away by the size, layout, standard, location & views from the property. It's by far the best self catering house we've stayed in and we've travelled all round the UK & Europe. We were also lucky with the weather, but even on the 2 days that weren't so good it was nice to wake up & spend time in such a comfortable property, enjoy the views & then go for walks along the coast or visit Antony House, which is nearby. Having the beach literally on your door step, reduced the amount of planning & carrying stuff, which is vital when you have twin 5 year old boys, who can get over excited! The village has a great choice of eating options, our favourite was the Devonport, the pubs were all reasonably priced and staff really friendly. I wouldn't hesitate going back.
