A short 3 km south west of Newquay, across the Gannel River Estuary, sits the charming North Cornish village of Crantock. It is a village that is steeped with history, dating back to 460 AD, with a delightful assortment of thatched and granite cottages nestling among a quaint network of narrow streets. For those looking to encapsulate the delight of the North Cornish coast, a holiday in Crantock provides a convenient and attractive base camp for exploring the area.
The village has everything required for those choosing a self-catering holiday in Crantock, with two pubs, a convenience store, two tea rooms and a surf hire shop. The older of the two pubs, the Old Albion Inn, dates back 400 years and houses the entrance to a mysterious smugglers passageway that once ran under the village. The Inn also has an original pasty oven, and until recently drew its water from a deep well under the bar. Directly across the road from the Old Albion Inn sits the more modern Cornishman pub, which also offers an assortment of fine foods and ales.
While enjoying the village heritage, why not visit St Carantocus church, residing on an ancient 5th century holy site. The church is home to an intricately carved wooden screen, and still provides home to the now redundant village stocks.
However, the true pride of Crantock is surely the magnificent local beach which emerges from the mouth of the Gannel River onto the Atlantic ocean, where it sits flanked and sheltered between two headlands. The beach provides over a mile of glorious sand, adjoining turquoise seas that are popular all year round for surfers, kayakers and kite boarders. For those wishing to try their hand at water sports, both surf board and canoe hire are available from the beach, and the local surf school provides expert lessons on surfing, body-boarding and paddle boarding.
The beach is one of Cornwall’s finest, and in the summer months is a haven for beach lovers, who can enjoy the excitement of swimming in the waves, or even snorkelling during calmer seas. The beach is backed by a deep ridge of rugged sand dunes that are excellent for the family to explore, and provide an ideal dog-friendly walking area for those planning a pet-friendly holiday in Crantock.
While visiting the beach, take the opportunity at low tide to view the 1920s rock carving of a local woman complete with an inscribed poem. Folklore has it that the poor lady was caught by the tide on her horse and came to an unfortunate end, with the carving being created in her memory by a distraught lover.
The nearby Beachcomber café provides an excellent dog friendly location for catching a bite to eat or a cream tea during your day out at the beach.
If you are looking to roll a walk into your day at the beach, then why not press on along the coastal path heading south west to the unspoilt neighbouring beach of Porth Joke (or Polly Joke). This serene and tranquil cove has remained unchanged for centuries, and provides a delightful blend of sand and rock pools for the whole family to enjoy.
A trip to Porth Joke will take you close by the West Pentire Headland, a National Trust area that has been designated as an SSI. The West Pentire Headland is a delight for nature lovers, and has become home to some of the most endangered wild flowers and rare plants in the country.

Limited parking exists to the front of the property and is on a first come first served basis however, a parking permit for one car is provided for guests staying at Flip Flops for the nearby village hall car park which is located just 100 yards up the road.

Crantock beach is a beautiful expanse of soft golden sand backed by grassy dunes on the western shore of the Gannel estuary. Owned and tended to by the National Trust, there's a car park, toilets and cafe nearby, making this a popular spot for families. Not only great for sandcastle-building and sunbathing, Crantock is popular for surfing and bodyboarding, with boards and canoes available to hire from the beach, and lifeguard cover throughout the summer season. On calm days, the turquoise seas are also well worth exploring armed with snorkel and flippers. The South West Coast Path backs the beach, leading to the famous poppy fields of Pentire Point and the secluded Polly Joke cove. Crantock is also dog-friendly all year round.

Possibly Cornwall’s most famous surfing beach, there’s masses to do here in and out of the water. Surfer’s and spectators alike can enjoy the location all year round on both beautifully calm and adrenaline filled days where Cornwall’s big wave the Cribbar is being surfed by the hardiest of surfers. The International Surfing Centre overlooks the beach and houses a variety of bars, restaurants, shops and surf hire; surf lessons are available through Fistral Beach Surf School, and the beach hosts a range of events throughout the year including Boardmasters in August.

Polly Joke Beach

Sheltered by Pentire Point and sandwiched between the busier beaches of Holywell Bay and Crantock beach, Porth Joke - or Polly Joke to locals - is a stunning, secluded cove. Totally unspoilt, there's a narrow sweep of fine sand and beautiful clear waters. A 15-minute walk from the nearest car park at West Pentire or Cubert Common, it's worth the effort for the peace and serenity. Like its neighbours, Polly Joke is great for swimming, bodyboarding and surfing, but beware that there's no lifeguard cover, nor facilities, so make sure to pack a picnic. At low tide, rockpools and caves are revealed, which are great fun to explore, while during the late spring and early summer, the surrounding headlands bloom with wildflowers. Porth Joke allows dogs throughout the year.

Stretching for a mile at low tide, there's loads of space for everyone, no matter what your ideal beach day looks like. Young families will love building sandcastles, exploring rockpools and playing in the shallow streams, surfers and bodyboarders will enjoy the consitent Atlantic swell and peace-seekers can find a quiet spot amongst the dunes to sit and read, dry off after sea swims or watch the sunset. There's also a magical cave to expore at low tide, filled with stalagmites. During the summer season, the National Trust-owned beach is covered by lifeguards, dogs are welcome all year round, and there's parking and facilities around a 5-minute walk away in Holywell village.
Lovely walk to this beautiful bay. Surf board and wetsuit hire available. As a swimmer the waves were exhilarating without there being too many bodyboarders to swim safely as in some other bays. 10min walk to toilet.

Absolutely loved the house. Masses of storage space, loads of room and all sorts of really sweet little extras, like the dog towels and the cream tea!! Really well stocked kitchen, and a very functional, pretty and useful outdoor area too. Everything was easy to find, in great condition and the house was immaculate too. Dishwasher and washing machine were very handy, the beds were really comfy and the location was perfect for the beach and to everywhere else too! And what a beach it is at Crantock!

The International Surfing Centre overlooks the beach and houses a variety of bars, restaurants, shops and surf hire; surf lessons are available through Fistral Beach Surf School, and the beach hosts a range of events throughout the year including Boardmasters in August.

Polly Joke Beach

Sheltered by Pentire Point and sandwiched between the busier beaches of Holywell Bay and Crantock beach, Porth Joke - or Polly Joke to locals - is a stunning, secluded cove. Totally unspoilt, there's a narrow sweep of fine sand and beautiful clear waters. A 15-minute walk from the nearest car park at West Pentire or Cubert Common, it's worth the effort for the peace and serenity. Like its neighbours, Polly Joke is great for swimming, bodyboarding and surfing, but beware that there's no lifeguard cover, nor facilities, so make sure to pack a picnic. At low tide, rockpools and caves are revealed, which are great fun to explore, while during the late spring and early summer, the surrounding headlands bloom with wildflowers. Porth Joke allows dogs throughout the year.

The archetypal north Cornish beach, Holywell Bay has a wide sweep of golden sand, great surf conditions and sprawling sand dunes. Stretching for a mile at low tide, there's loads of space for everyone, no matter what your ideal beach day looks like. Young families will love building sandcastles, exploring rockpools and playing in the shallow streams, surfers and bodyboarders will enjoy the consitent Atlantic swell and peace-seekers can find a quiet spot amongst the dunes to sit and read, dry off after sea swims or watch the sunset. There's also a magical cave to expore at low tide, filled with stalagmites. During the summer season, the National Trust-owned beach is covered by lifeguards, dogs are welcome all year round, and there's parking and facilities around a 5-minute walk away in Holywell village.
Lovely walk to this beautiful bay. Surf board and wetsuit hire available. As a swimmer the waves were exhilarating without there being too many bodyboarders to swim safely as in some other bays. 10min walk to toilet.
