My day out: The Camel Trail

On a lovely sunny day, I wanted to get out the office and take advantage of the great weather, so I cycled from Wadebridge to Padstow on the Camel Trail with a group of friends.

The trail and Padstow were both buzzing with people out and about enjoying the late June heatwave in Cornwall.

Whilst in Padstow, we stopped for some lunch at the recently renovated Greens café – which boasts one of the best dining views in the harbour town as it’s perched up on the hill overlooking the Camel Estuary towards Rock. I’d never eaten here before, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and service. Greens isn’t just a café, it also offers a crazy golf course where we decided to play a round, which was very enjoyable.

Once we had finished our round of golf we decided to sit on the edge of the harbour and enjoy an ice cream before cycling back to Wadebridge.

This day out is suitable for all, from family groups, to couples and solo travellers. It’s great for those who like the outdoors and enjoy an active lifestyle.

Top tips for cycling the Camel Trail:

  • If you don’t have a bike there’s no need to worry as there’s plenty of bike hire establishments either side of the Camel Trail.
  • The Wadebridge to Padstow route is 5.5 miles long, and takes up to an hour to cycle, but certainly no longer.
  • Roughly halfway between the two destinations is a café that offers all sorts of refreshments, but I would always recommend packing your own water as it can get very hot in the height of the summer.
