Experiencing Cornish cuisine can be much more than just sitting down in a restaurant and being served at your table. Here in Cornwall we are lucky to have several cookery schools offering an immersive experience which allows you to connect with the wonderful ingredients the county has to offer. From fresh seafood to foraged herbs and vegetables, a course at one of these schools will certainly put your culinary skills to good use.
This is the newest Cornish cookery school in town, located in our capital city of Truro. Run by Maria Taylor and former Rick Stein chef AJ Turner, they describe a course at the school as a ‘cookery spa day’. If massages and manicures aren’t quite your thing, then a day spent preparing a delicious feast to bring back to your Cornish cottage might be more appealing. Choose from a Friday night experience, Saturday feast, or a family course designed for adults and children to cook together. Whatever course you choose, there’s one thing for sure - you won’t go hungry!

Nestled away on the Roseland Peninsula in an ancient oak woodland bordering the River Fal, Philleigh Way offers a farmhouse cookery experience with homely recipes which make the most of its local produce. From family pizza days, to a pasty masterclass and courses themed around international cuisine, there’s something to suit all tastes and abilities. Philleigh Way is also hosting woodfired feast nights throughout the summer, utilising its outdoor kitchen and providing a relaxed courtyard dining experience.
Based just a few miles down the road from Philleigh Way, explore the oak woodland overlooking the River Fal to forage ingredients from the seashore, woods, fields and hedgerow. 7th Rise courses involve being taught how to identify edible wildlife to use in your cooking. The kitchen is located in a 300 year old charcoal burner’s cottage, where you can learn lots of different outdoor cooking techniques and enjoy a mouthwatering feast to end the day.

Probably the most well known of the Cornish cookery schools, Rick Stein’s establishment in Padstow offers the chance to learn new cooking skills whilst enjoying lovely views over the Camel Estuary. Originally famous for its focus on seafood cookery, courses have since expanded to included Indian, Italian and Mexican themes, inspired by Rick’s travels around the world.

Found near Penzance, Fat Hen is known as ‘The Wild Cookery School’. Many courses involve foraging for ingredients before returning to the bespoke barn kitchen, learning how to cook with the wild ingredients, and how to use this knowledge in everyday cooking. Courses range from a full foodie weekend, to feast days and simple foraging workshops, as well as the opportunity to book the barn out for private dining, perfect for a celebration meal if you’re staying in the area with friends and family.
