Rural pubs in Cornwall
Venturing away from the Cornish coastline and heading in land towards Bodmin Moor you’ll find many traditional pubs hidden in some of our rural villages. We’ve chosen our top five which we would highly recommend visiting when coming to Cornwall.
St Kew Inn
Voted one of the top 50 pubs in the UK, this traditional village pub has a fantastic bar if you just want to pop in for a drink and serves a delicious selection of food. The restaurant is broken up into a couple of smaller rooms so you can have your own cosy corner to relax and dine with friends and family. It also has an expansive beer garden – perfect for soaking up the Cornish sun in the summer months.
The Old Inn
Claimed to be Cornwall’s highest inn, located on top of Bodmin Moor in St Breward. This dog-friendly pub boasts warming log fires and sloping beamed ceilings. Delicious meals come in nice big ‘Cornish portions’ (especially the moorland mixed grills, not for the faint-hearted) and the Sunday Carvery is not to be missed either. We recommend a ramble on the moors before you visit to make room for the feast.
The Smugglers Den
Found in the picturesque village of Cubert near Newquay is this idyllic 16th century thatched country pub. It’s not too far from the coast, so it’s a great place to visit on your way home from a day at the beach, with log fires to warm you up in the winter months. Quench your thirst with a selection of local beers and ales and delve in to some classic British food.
Jamaica Inn
Built in 1750, this historic coaching inn was made famous by the Daphne Du Maurier novel. In an elevated position on Bodmin Moor, it’s a great stop for those entering Cornwall (as it’s just off the A30, the main road into the county) and also for those wanting to explore the moors on foot.
St Tudy Inn
One of the county’s best gastro pubs, this rural pub is located in the village of St Tudy in north Cornwall. Serving simple, rustic, seasonal food and a great selection of beer, wine and cocktails – there’s something to suit everyone here. Whether you’re looking to warm up with a drink in front of the fire after a moorland walk, or are looking for a special place to dine on your Cornish escape, we highly recommend St Tudy Inn.
