5 of the best Sunday roasts in Cornwall

Sitting down to a Sunday roast is often a weekly tradition, whether at home or on holiday. But we understand the preparation and effort of cooking your own when staying in one of our self-catering cottages in Cornwall can be a little overwhelming at a time when you are meant to be relaxing.

We have scoured the county to find some of the finest roast dinners in Cornwall, so you don’t have to slave away in the kitchen on your Cornish break. Below we give you our top five…

The Old Inn, St Breward

Known as Cornwall’s highest inn, set in the heart of Bodmin Moor, The Old Inn offers a warm welcome with roaring log fires and traditional pub decor throughout. The dog-friendly pub serves a Sunday carvery all day from 12pm until 9pm all year round. Choose from a selection of four delicious Cornish meats (you can even have all four if you choose the maxi option) then help yourself to all the trimmings.

Why not build up an appetite for your meal with a walk on Bodmin Moor? One of our favourite rambles is Rough Tor, a very scenic route with fantastic views when you get to the top of the hill. To stay nearby, see our selection of self-catering cottages near St Breward here.

The Merrymoor, Mawgan Porth

This seaside pub is just a few steps from the beach at Mawgan Porth on the north Cornish coast. Its popular Sunday carvery is the perfect lunchtime treat after a beach walk or a paddle in the sea. Everything is freshly prepared, and it’s well-known for the homemade Yorkshire puddings.

We have a lovely range of self-catering properties in Mawgan Porth. Browse our collection, and soon you could be stepping out on the sand and enjoy great pub food right here in north Cornwall.

The Halsetown Inn, St Ives

Often featured in round-ups of the best Sunday roasts to be found in Cornwall, The Halsetown Inn has quite a reputation to maintain. But it’s no surprise why people love it here. If it’s not the juicy beef sirloin or the slow-cooked pork belly, it’s probably the rosemary and garlic roast potatoes or the honey and thyme carrots. Visit this west Cornish country pub between 12pm and 3pm on Sundays to try the roast for yourself. Dogs are also very welcome.

Just a mile from St Ives, one of Cornwall’s most-loved holiday destinations, you’ll never be too far from this pub by staying in one of our cottages in the harbour town.

The Rising Sun, Truro

An award-winning country style pub in the heart of Cornwall’s capital city, Truro, The Rising Sun welcomes all, including the dog, to enjoy its relaxed atmosphere and seasonal food. Its mouthwatering Sunday roast menu often features topside beef, pork loin, lamb shoulder, and a great selection of vegetarian options. But make sure you save room for pudding, as the apple and rhubarb crumble is out of this world!

Central to many places in Cornwall, you’re never too far away from Truro and this fantastic little pub. Whilst staying near Truro, it would be rude not to indulge in a little retail therapy as well – you’ll certainly deserve a good lunch after carrying all those bags.

Star & Garter, Falmouth

Expect nothing but best from this destination in the heart of Falmouth. Boasting harbour views across Falmouth Bay, enjoy a wonderful afternoon by the fire at the Star & Garter whilst delving into your roast, which is served from 12pm to 3pm for lunch, and 6pm until 9pm for dinner.

By staying in one of our holiday cottages in Falmouth, you can be just a short walk away from here, enabling you to wash down the moorland aged rump of beef, leg of lamb, or pork accompanied by plenty of crackling, with one of the bar’s exquisite cocktails. You can make ours a martini.
