West Cornwall’s best rock pooling beaches for kids

You are never far from a rock pool in Cornwall, where children can enjoy hours hunting for fascinating creatures from limpets to crabs and sea anemones. Here are some of our favourite rock pooling beaches in west Cornwall to keep the kids occupied.

Porthmeor

Located in the popular resort of St Ives, a mecca for family holidays, it’s fortunate that there’s a good place for rock-pools. Porthmeor is a surfing beach, but when the tide goes out, it leaves water in many depressions in rocks at either side. There’s so much marine activity to witness here, and lowering a waterproof camera into a rockpool is an unintrusive way to see wildlife that might otherwise hide from prying hands.

Kynance Cove

Although not the most obvious choice for rock pooling due to its smooth rocks, you can always find something at Kynance Cove if you look hard enough. The caves here are the best place to search for creatures, where many periwinkles and barnacles cling to the rocks in the perfect damp atmosphere.

We have a wonderful selection of holiday cottages in west Cornwall which are available to rent throughout the year.
