Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre
(6 miles)

(1)

An all-weather attraction where children go free, Charlestown Shipwreck Centre takes you back two hundred years, when the area was a tiny fishing village with no harbour.  As trade boomed in nearby St Austell, it became clear that there was need for a proper harbour, and local businessman by the name of Charles Rashleigh set about making plans – hence the name (Charles’ town).  Today the Shipwreck and Heritage Centre charts the history of this corner of Cornwall, including the ship wrecks off the nearby coast.  There are trails, a visual audio theater, the RNLB Amelia which was last stationed at Scarborough, and a German armoured dress diving suit, which was used in the 1920/30's, amongst other pieces of history.  There’s also a Kids’ Corner and plenty to see and do for the whole family.

Interesting for those prepared to engage with the stories presented. Very informative guidebook with plenty to read. The upstairs restaurant was far from great (we just went in for a coffee which was... unpleasant). We would say to ignore the discount which comes with the museum entry ticket and try one of the nearby cafes instead.

October 2023

We had a wonderful time as always. Many thanks.

October 2023

It’s a wonderful house set in an excellent location. I really appreciated the safety handrail over the bath. The new front bedroom layout is a great improvement. Spacious and lighter.

September 2023

Due to hot weather we mostly stayed in the garden and admired the view.

May 2023

Loved our stay at Longships. We were so lucky this time with perfect weather, but have been five times before and it’s always a pleasure to stay here. The house allows dogs but so clean we could not smell any (a little sad as this is our first time without any). It has great views from the house at any time of the year, it’s like a moving picture. Looking forward to our next visit.

November 2022

Fabulous place to relax, enjoy watching the sea and wildlife and explore the woodland and coastal walks.

We loved the cottage and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our arrival was complicated by a fairly long power cut but once we were sorted out, we found amazing views from the cottage and we were extremely comfortable.

November 2021

We have now stayed in Longships 8 times, which say's it all. Bungalow homely and views are fantastic.
