For a truly idyllic coastal escape, choose a holiday in Fowey.

On the banks of the River Fowey estuary in south Cornwall, Fowey is a beautiful old port town, steeped in history. Pastel-painted houses and quaint cottages cling to the water's edge, while the tranquil estuary is filled with luxury yachts and brightly-coloured fishing boats.

Holidays in Fowey revolve around the water. Here you can wake up to wonderful water views and watch boats bob by while you eat your breakfast. Sailors flock to Fowey for the sheltered waters and stunning surroundings, while those you haven’t yet learned the ropes can explore the river by kayak, paddle board or little dinghies. In the historic harbour, you’ll find ferries to pretty Polruan on the opposite side of the estuary, beautiful Bodinnick and the bustling harbour town of Mevagissey. For us, a ferry trip is a must when staying in Fowey - you’ll be treated to beautiful coastal views and might even spot a friendly pod of dolphins!

Those who haven’t found their sea legs will love exploring the stunning surroundings on foot. There are plenty of walks around Fowey, from riverside trails to coastal hikes along the South West Coast Path. Follow the esplanade to Readymoney Cove, a popular, sheltered sandy beach at the mouth of the estuary. It’s a lovely place to relax, sunbathe and swim, and is overlooked by St Catherine’s Castle, an artillery fort built during the reign of Henry VIII. If one beach just isn’t enough, you’ll find several beautiful beaches and picturesque coves nearby, including Lantic Bay, Polkerris beach and Par Sands.

Back on dry land, Fowey’s warren of pretty, narrow streets are filled with artisan shops, interesting boutiques and galleries. You won’t struggle to find somewhere lovely to eat in Fowey; its waterfront boasts lots of old maritime pubs, cafes, restaurants and proper fish and chip shops.

Famous author Daphne Du Maurier lived on the Fowey estuary for most of her life and was inspired by the area’s spectacular scenery and tranquil, peaceful surroundings, which influenced some of her greatest works. In tribute, the town holds the Daphne Du Maurier literary festival every May, an event not to be missed if you are not sure when to book your holiday in Fowey.

Discover one of the most beautiful areas in Cornwall when you book a holiday in Fowey.

Unfriendly reception from lady behind bar and menu misleadingly promised home made tartare sauce with two of our dishes, but they came with sauce in sachets. When raised, we were told their chef had left. Not good enough.

Fowey Aquarium
(3 miles)

(2)

Fowey is a delightful, historic town in Cornwall and its aquarium is a chance to glimpse marine life from the Cornish coast up close.  Small but perfectly formed, the aquarium is brimming with opportunities to learn, playing host to a wide range of fish from the tiny gobies and shannies from the shallows, up to conger eels which inhabit deep wrecks.  First established in 1952, the aquarium still retains many of the original tanks. Fresh sea water is pumped in daily at high tide and the filtration is minimal, while the majority of fish are obtained locally from fishermen and anglers.  A joy for children and adults, opening times vary so check the website before you visit, and prices start at £4 for adults and £2.50 for children.

allow yourselves at least 10 minutes to ensure you see it all !

October 2021

What a cute little place this is! When the children were younger we stayed in Fowey every year, and the first thing they always wanted to do was visit the aquarium. It has a small touch pond as well. But - it is TINY - literally in one large room. So as long as you understand it is what it is, you won't be disappointed. A nice way to spend 30 mins when in Fowey but don't go just for this.

Lantivet Bay
(2 miles)

(1)

Between Polruan and Polperro along the coastal path, Lantivet Bay is only accessible at low tide when a sand and pebble beach is revealed.  Parking is in the National Trust car park at Polruan, where there are toilets as well, but there aren’t any facilities closer to the beach itself.  Dogs are allowed all year round, which is lovely as it’s the perfect beach to incorporate into a walk.  The National Trust recommends a charming circular route, starting in the car park and taking in 2.4 miles of beautiful bays and surrounding landscape, and giving you the chance to explore the area with its rich smuggling heritage.

Parked in the National Trust Car Park and took the footpath towards the beach. Beautiful views.

Polruan Back Beach
(3 miles)

In the heart of Polruan, Back Beach is not short of facilities and nearby shops and restaurants.  A pretty little beach that’s popular with families, it has beautiful views across the river to Fowey and is a lovely place to watch the world go by with all the boats pottering along in front of you.  It’s predominantly a sand beach, leading to a sheltered section of the river, so it’s good for swimming, but there aren’t any lifeguards around.  The only complication for access is that it’s very difficult to park in the village, and it’s a considerable walk down the steep hill from the car park at St Saviours, or a ferry ride across the river from Fowey.  Therefore, it’s best to combine a visit with a day exploring the village itself to make the most of it.

Readymoney Cove Beach

Polperro Beach
(4 miles)

(22)

In South East Cornwall, Polperro is widely thought to be one of the area’s most picturesque fishing villages.  Brimming with whitewashed cottages all the way down the harbour, the beach sits in a sheltered position under the cliffs, only visible at low tide and close to the harbour.  Unsurprisingly, it’s a popular destination and can get busy in the summer months.  Dogs are not permitted at the beach during peak season, from Easter to October, and while parking in the village itself is all but impossible, but there’s a large car park about a mile up the valley with a regular shuttle service going up and down the hill.

Just beautiful??

November 2023

We have visited The Blue Peter many times on our holidays to Polperro over the past 20 year or more. There is always a warm and friendly welcome from the staff. The food is excellent. This is a proper pub.

July 2023

beautiful little cove -- just watch the tide times ..........

August 2022

We didn't really use the beach but I did see someone allow their dog to foul on the beach and, although they cleared it up to a certain extent, I don't think this is really acceptable when children are going to be playing in the sand.

Great beach.

June 2021

Polperro a beautiful place , a lovely fishing village

May 2021

The most beautiful little cove featuring caves to explore and the 'net loft' out on the rugged rocks. The sea is a divine colour and I can't wait to come back and swim at a warmer time of year! I enjoyed two mornings in the sun and the peace of being out there first thing exploring this little beach area, it was a great start to those days!

May 2021

This Is a glorious, quaint fishing village with narrow winding alleys and a beautiful little harbour. It is more suited to couples rather than families as there are not many facilities for children, other than a small beach at low tide.

September 2020

Perfect . Love love love

August 2020

The children enjoyed exploring the caves and beachcombing when the tide was out, too many dogs off the lead but it was out of season. Main reason for leaving the review is to strongly recommend you take the two hour fishing trip with either Chris or Olly Puckey on the Smuggler. We had the boat to ourselves and had an excellent value for money trip which we all thoroughly enjoyed. Caught 3 mackerel and a pollock which we took back to the cottage and cooked for tea. A delight! Oh, and we went for brunch afterwards at House on the Props - definitely recommended, I've never had a full English on a baguette before, it was awesome!

October 2019

Our favourite place to visit with wonderful little shops, restaurants and art galleries to browse in on the walk down to the quay. Amazing views as you leave the village and head on the coastal cliff path back towards Looe. We took our dog and he enjoyed exploring the numerous rock pools on the beach. We also explored the right hand coastal path and stumbled across a secluded pool amongst the rocks - steep ascent but well worth the hike! People were bathing in the pool as it was a real sun trap..

August 2019

Small but lovely

May 2019

Beautiful beach if you love beach combing.

April 2019

Easy access, dog ok

October 2018

We visited Polperro harbour/beach with our springer spaniel and although the write-up says no dogs allowed, they are allowed, just on a lead between 10am and 6pm, although beach is small, the sea is safe to swim in and not full of huge rocks, lovely ????

August 2018

Lovely clean small beach.

May 2018

Polperro is a magic place. It is so pretty with its winding streets and old cottages and the harbour with its fishing boats. The residents are so friendly and welcoming and there’s a wide choice of restaurants and cafes. I particularly recommend Michelle’s for fantastic food and a real welcome. As a woman on my own I dined there, as elsewhere, with no feeling of awkwardness. Breakfast at the House on the Props just unbeatable! Spring is one of the best times to visit for the wonderful coastal walks and the masses of wild flowers. When you visit, think about the parking situation before you go as it needs organising, but many rentable cottages have spaces provided in the main car park and PauI who runs a little motorised transport system for luggage is very helpful and reliable. I am one of the thousands of people who just love Polperro and every time I visit feel a great reluctance to leave.

May 2018

Enjoyed the harbour etc and all the shops but had dogs so did not visit the beach but a beautiful setting.

June 2017

really lovely, a must visit desination.

August 2023

We really enjoyed our stay. The house is absolutely gorgeous. It was very spacious with a beautiful big kitchen with aga and equally big sitting room. We enjoyed sitting on the terrace outside the kitchen too. It was peaceful and well located for walking to lantic bay, Lansolos and polruan. The view out to sea was nice too. Hopefully we will be back.

October 2021

This is a gorgeous family size property that provides everything that you need for a comfortable stay in the countryside. It is furnished in a traditional manner and is in a great location for visiting lots of places on the South Cornwall coast. It's plus points are that you will have loads of room to spread out and relax, eat and enjoy your time together. It's negative points are that most things are a car drive away and if you're in need of constant super fast broadband - forget it. If you're happy to be self-contained, to chill out and relax, make your own entertainment and enjoy each other's company then this place is for you.

August 2021

We had a lovely two weeks here in June. It was just the two of us but could easily have fitted the rest of the family. The barn is in a wonderful location with views of the coastline. We spent most meals at home eating on the lovely terrace. The kitchen was one of the best equipped self-catered kitchens we've ever stayed in. Especially loved the Aga and the huge area for cooking / reading/ playing board games. We spent most of our week swimming in the various coves / walking the coastal path / driving to Boddinick for the ferry to Fowey for restaurants and shops. We had a relaxing, peaceful two weeks and can't wait to return.

July 2021

An excellent base for exploring this part of Cornwall. The local small beaches were within a 20 minute walk and the views from the cliff tops were stunning. Visits to Polperro, Fowey, Looe and further afield to St. Mawes with a boat trip to Falmouth were easy to get to by car. The property was superb, in fact the photos online do not do it justice, the barn is by far bigger than you would expect with lots of attention to detail which made for a very relaxing and comfortable stay.

June 2021

Beautiful area and thankfully misses the hubbub of the nearby towns..which was most desirable….at these particular times. You would be pushed to find a more beautiful area.
