Treetops Estate is situated in a unique, impossibly romantic and hauntingly mysterious Cornish Country Estate with nearly 20 acres of historic gardens and grounds. Inhabited since the Stone Age, it sits at the centre of its own secret wooded valley and because of its extreme southerly position it has long been known as ‘The First and Last Gentleman’s Residence in England’. At the heart of the estate is the Manor House with its collection of atmospheric listed buildings, historic gardens and grounds dating back centuries and the lost secret ‘Torchlight’ tunnel to the sea. Guests are free to wander and explore the many mysterious and enchanting tracks and pathways in the grounds and discover the oldest mulberry tree in the country, planted nearly 1000 years ago and mentioned in the Domesday Book. The 17th century parterres, the ha-ha, the Clocktower (the tallest building on the Lizard), the Regency period picturesque romantic remodelling of the Poldhu River to create a series of ornamental ponds connected by rapids, ravines and waterfalls as it races down to the sea, the early Victorian arboretum, the tropical and sub-tropical plants, the three ancient tree-lined carriage drives, the walled gardens, the former Jacobean bowling green, the Victorian croquet lawn, the Elizabethan serpentine wall-walk, the ancient holy well, the mediaeval earth ramparts, the historic bridge over the Poldhu, the Regency rock dell, the cryptic half-moon steps, the Victorian bothy, the collection of early Victorian melon and pineapple house bases (a project for future reconstruction) and much more. Treetops Estate is quite simply, a secret and tranquil hideaway for the delectation of all who encounter its seductive charm. “The intact formal gardens of the hall are an improbable 17th century survivor, a genuine time trip hidden down narrow winding lanes and most rewarding… the garden has hardly suffered a scrap of change and remains one of the most likeable and covetable gardens in Cornwall… its particular charm is its mystery” (Dr T Mowl, Historic Gardens of Cornwall, 2005). The grounds offer much to delight the botanist, entomologist or bird-watcher. With extensive areas managed for wildlife, the gardens contain otters, badgers, foxes, rabbits, woodpeckers, buzzards, nesting swallows, ravens, herons and many more species of birds and mammals. The grounds are rich in wild flowers, grasses, ferns and herbs, and contain some of the most spectacular trees in West Cornwall. More than half the country’s species of butterflies have been recorded on the estate – where wild areas mix effortlessly with the formal and a feat that few of the country’s nature reserves can boast - not to mention Treetops resident roaming peacocks and ornamental pheasants. And all, of course, just a few minutes from the sea and some of the finest and most spectacular coves and beaches in the country, the nearest being Poldhu Cove just minutes away. All of the cottages are listed buildings of stone and slate and share the estate’s unique atmosphere of peace, romantic seclusion and mystery. The Domesday Estate and its environment are kept for the sole enjoyment of the owners, who are writers, and their holiday guests, many of whom return year after year. You’ll be in good company too; Queen Victoria and Prince Albert stayed in 1846 when they visited Kynance Cove, while Sir Arthur Conan Doyle also stayed before the first World War and set his Sherlock Holmes story ‘The Adventure of the Devil’s Foot’ on the estate. If you can tear yourself away from the property you will also be in one of Cornwall’s most delightful areas with a wide variety of sheltered coves and sandy beaches as well as numerous National Trust properties and other attractions to suit all tastes. The entire Lizard Peninsula is ablaze with wild flowers from the early spring through to late autumn. The nearby village of Mullion, 1.5 miles, has local shops, inns, cafes and restaurants, craft shops and art galleries and for a wider selection of amenities, Helston is 4 miles. One of the owners is fluent in French, German and Spanish for the convenience of overseas visitors.
