The Lizard Peninsula is said to be the least developed part of south Cornwall. It is the most southerly part of England, as evidenced by the semi-tropical flora frequently seen hereabouts. The real charm of the area, which is so typically pre-tourist Cornwall, is to be found in the superb coastline with its contrasts from the relative tranquillity of the Helford River, the imposing ruggedness of the East Coast, and the pleasures of Kennack Sands to the south.
Six miles south of Helston, once frequented by smugglers, the village is still attractive, with cottages, shops and village church. This popular part of the Lizard has magnificent cliff walks, dotted with tiny fishing hamlets, coves and beaches - Church Cove, Poldhu, Polurrian and Kennack Sands are all within a short drive.
An attractive old market town with a wide selection of shops serving the Lizard Peninsula, and curving old streets and steep alleys which allow sudden vistas of Cornish countryside and hills. Perhaps it is most well known for the Furry Dance, an annual celebration of spring in early May. Helston is within easy reach of many excellent beaches and coves around the Lizard Peninsula as well as the theme park Flambards just outside the town.
This pretty harbour village has been a centre for boatbuilding since the nineteenth century. It is a haven for local artists, whose works are sold in many of the village shops, and even has a resident potter. There are a number of interesting walks to be taken in the area, including the fresh water lake at Penrose Park.
