Tucked away on the south eastern tip of the Roseland Peninsula, Gorran Haven is one of those remarkable Cornish coves that most visitors to the County will not find.
The lane winds downhill following the valley floor towards a small harbour and sizable sandy beach with towering cliffs on either side. On the upper slopes there are some modern houses but towards the harbour and the old part of the village are narrow crooked streets and pretty cottages set in a charming disorder. Most day to day requirements are available in the village and there is a pub.
Situated on the northern edge of the Roseland Peninsula, Probus and Grampound are neighbouring villages midway between St Austell and the pleasant County town of Truro.
In Grampound, cottages of brown local slate climb the hill and the broad main street provides a clue to its past. It was once a 'Rotten Borough' and incredibly sent two members to Parliament. The small town hall, turreted, and ornate clock tower in miniature are reminders of the past glories. Probus, too, has had its moments as witnessed by the magnificent wrought iron and heavily gilded central lamp that stands in the village square. Both villages have pleasant village Inns, post office and shops, sufficient for day to day needs. All the amenities and pastimes of the South Coast are within reasonable driving distance. For the beach going family, the pretty coves of Portloe and Portholland are a little over five miles on quiet country lanes and the picturesque fishing village of Mevagissey is a similar distance.
