The tiny village of Sheviock with its stone built cottages and 13th Century Church is set amid wooded hills and fields in an area of lanes and small villages.
This is Cornwall’s forgotten corner; part of The Rame Peninsula, bordered on 3 sides by water with Looe 9 miles away yet the splendid City of Plymouth only 7 via the car ferry. Portwrinkle with its beaches, harbour, coastal path and golf course is one mile away with Whitsand Bay and Mount Edgcumbe country park within easy driving.
The twin towns of East and West Looe are situated on either side of the estuary linked by a fine bridge of seven arches.
Stone cottages with blue slate roofs climb the hillsides with access through a maze of winding streets and narrow courts that fan out from the broad, cobbled quaysides. The old callings of the sea such as fishing and boat building are still very much in evidence, alongside the activities and entertainments of a popular holiday resort. In Looe, everything is to hand with a beach of sand and rock pools at Hannafore on the West side and a fine sandy beach across the bridge, a few minutes walk.
Fowey is a small Cornish town with a long history and much charm. With its safe anchorage in the lovely Fowey River Estuary, it has been a port since Norman times.
Whereas its sister ports of Plymouth and Falmouth had room to spread, Fowey was always confined to the hillsides and its relatively narrow valley which, most would say, has fortunately left it a small and simple town, an ad hoc mixture of the big house, ancient church and Cornish stone cottages mingling comfortably and easily with the elegant houses of Georgian and Victorian times.
For the beach going family, Readymoney Cove at the seaward end of the town provides sand and safe bathing. Fowey is a popular stopping-off point for cruising yachts and the river estuary provides ample safe dinghy sailing waters for the younger members of the family. There are several public car parks, the shops and supermarkets at St Austell are a 20 minute drive as is The Eden Project.
We have taken this area as being between Torpoint and Calstock along the very pretty tidal reaches of the River Tamar with its exit to the sea at the old City port and naval base of Plymouth.
A lovely rural area abounding in wildlife with small villages and hamlets but still only a maximum of 30 minutes drive to the wonderful sandy beaches at Whitsand Bay. The area contains the Championship Golf Course at St Mellion, the beautiful National Trust property at Cotehele and the museum village at the old mining port of Morwhelham Quay. There are extensive and numerous walks throughout the area as well as canoeing and sailing and there are boat trips from Plymouth to Calstock. From St Mellion roughly in the centre of the area Callington is 4 miles, Plymouth 10 miles and Tavistock at the entrance to Dartmoor is 15 miles.
The Rame Peninsula or “the Forgotten Corner” as it is known locally is bordered on three sides by water, the Rivers Lynher, Tamar and Plymouth Sound.
Here you will find an area of natural beauty, quiet secluded beaches, magnificent scenery and spectacular walks. Historical fishing villages, formerly the smuggling centre and anchorage for Plymouth, are unspoilt by time with colour washed cottages clinging to the cliffs, narrow streets and leaning walls. Old coastal forts such as Picklecombe indicate the importance of Plymouth Sound as a naval anchorage since time immemorial. The coastal path starts at Cremyll winding its way through the 800 acre Mount Edgcumbe Park and continues on past Penlee Point and Rame Head with its 11th Century monks chapel and stunning views to the glorious sandy beaches of Whitsand Bay. Antony House is well worth a visit, with its gardens sloping down to the Lynher River, sea angling and bird watching are very popular with golf and horse riding also available.
