Crackington Haven

A delightfully unspoilt cove nestling in the dramatic cliffs of the North Cornish Coast, with footpaths carefully maintained by the National Trust, to take you through breathtaking scenery to nearby Boscastle, Tintagle or Widemouth Bay. Originally existing as a small port importing lime and coal and exporting slate, the operation of it must have been a hazardous affair as the ships simply ran up onto the beach at high tide. Sand and seaweed for the land were removed by donkey and a water mill operated in the village. Surfing is possible from the sandy beach which, at low tide with its surrounding rock pools, provides the ideal playground for children. Sea fishing is easily available from Boscastle and horse and pony riding locally, whilst a full range of family entertainment and shops can be found at Bude, 20 minutes away by car and The Eden Project and many lovely gardens of central Cornwall are just under an hour. Higher Crackington has a post office stores and down at the cove are small shops, car parks, a beach café and hotels open to non residents. In the past days of sails, many a ship sought shelter here, now it is the ideal haven for a family holiday.

Stratton

An historic village with a beautiful 15th Century Church, old coaching Inn, cobbled lanes and thatched cottages. Just two miles away from the coastal resorts of Bude and Widemouth Bay with excellent facilities for fishing, surfing, golf, riding, canal and coastal walks.

Bude

Bude is the most northerly of the Cornish resort towns and boasts excellent facilities for surfing, sailing, golf and a host of other activities. The beaches at Bude itself and close by Widemouth Bay, are some of the finest in the country, making it an ideal area for a family holiday. Visitors to the Bude area also have the opportunity to explore the very pretty North Cornish and North Devon hinterland and the North Devon coastline with Clovelly only being 16 miles. The Eden Project and the many lovely gardens of central Cornwall are just over an hours drive.

Bude provides a good selection of shops, restaurants and bars, all within walking distance of the cottage. A feature of Summerleaze Beach is the large sea water swimming pool which is patrolled during high season by qualified lifeguards. Dogs are permitted on Summerleaze Beach, but not on the adjacent Crooklets Beach. Outdoor sporting facilities include a Links golf course, tennis, rowing on the canal and mini golf. The Leisure Centre with go karting, ten pin bowling and ball park are 5 minutes drive away (adjacent to Morrisons Supermarket) as is the indoor swimming pool with wave machine and large slide. There are also lovely walks along the Canal and over the cliffs to Compass Point and Widemouth Bay.

Boscastle

No other village in Cornwall remotely resembles Boscastle. There is perhaps a little of Clovelly in the Old High Street and the harbour is vaguely akin to Port Quin, but the overall effect is quite unique. John Betjeman says that Boscastle contains the biggest variety of scenery and character in a small area to be found on the North Cornwall Coast. Whilst here, Hardy wrote his lovely lyric 'at Castle Botterel' (the old name for Boscastle). The beach is tiny, but it is possible to swim in the harbour. Most people, however, go to Trebarwith where there is a long expanse of sand at low tide and are amply rewarded for the 4 mile journey. Bude and Clovelly are both within easy reach and The Eden Project and the many lovely gardens of central Cornwall are just under an hours drive.

Launceston

Launceston became known as Cornwall’s northern gateway with the building of the Keep in 1067. Still an imposing monument that overlooks the town and surrounding countryside. Interesting small shops, a museum and the steam railway which runs for 1.5 miles through the Kensey Valley makes this town a worthwhile visit. There are two golf courses, a riding school and, not far from North Petherwin the Tamar Otter Sanctuary. The many attractions of West Cornwall are only an hour and a half’s drive and the Eden Project in central Cornwall only 45 minutes.
